Dek Logs 2
Dek races to his barracks just in time for check in. He throws his cloak over his head and storms straight to the infirmary after getting approval to leave the fort. No one dares stop him. Not even for a compliment.
He sees the helmet before he saw him. The yellow and black trimmed helmet that his father wore every time he goes out to toxic planets for research. For his job.
Never seeing Dek graduate from the naval academy. Always having an excuse to put work before his family. A family that he made sure to keep from falling down the rabbit hole of history. It always tires Dek out seeing his mom try to explain his fathers role to him.
It was never easy for them. It was far worse when Dak would be off in another system playing with the local fauna and never with his own tadpoles. It hurts to think that way about the man that was currently laid out on a traveler size medical bed.
But seeing his father lying, half dead, oblivious about his current situation and that he’s safe now, broke something in Dek. His body jerks in a way that pulls him towards his fathers bedside. How his knees fall to the ground and his hands claw to feel anything that may resemble a chance of his father waking up. But it all comes too soon and Dek is laying his head near his fathers hand, holding it, until his exhaustion overwhelms him.
The last month was hard. The relapse from hope to devastation back to hope was too cruel to watch as his mother weeps in his barracks after learning the news. It couldn’t have been too long until Gobby was sent to help Dek bring her back to where they live. For that he was grateful for his friend.
The emperor even made a visit to their house. It was unplanned but it was a simple visit and Dek was embarrassed that his mom showed old family photos. He was happy that his mother was finding hope again. That the empire would have their backs through anything and everything.
Unlike his mom, Dek kept with his work and training. His new responsibilities kept him busy enough to take his mind off things for a while. Not for long. Never for too long.
He falls asleep listening to his fathers heartbeat.
