After the massacre, he had selective mutism.

He hums songs his mother used to sing to him.

Drinks coffee because his dad used to (Sasuke prefers tea)

Constantly had nightmares after the massacre and trained himself not to scream.

Is very good with sewing (he had to because who’s gonna sew the uchiha symbol otherwise?)

Hates doing laundry.

Cooking makes him feel closer to his mom.

There was this tomato sauce his mom used to make, Sasuke recreates it using her recipe but it doesn’t taste the same, not even close.

Has massive survivors guilt. (thats canon i think)

He tries to keep his Clan’s customs and traditions alive. Some of its history is oral so he talks to himself, doesn’t write it down because he respects how it’s done.

Has a soft spot for kids.

He loved flying with his curse mark form. Misses his wings.

Raised with ideas of honor of the Uchiha, how can he let Itachi represent them? Continue killing innocents and rampaging villages with Uchiha still attached to his name?

This guy is inherently such a serious person. He’s sharp, incredibly intelligent and with years of experience under his belt. He’s a venerated legend and known to basically every ninja in the world. He’s a war vet. The list goes on.

Yet he chooses to present himself as non-threatening. He slouches, is chronically late, lets other people bully him into situations, reads Icha Icha in public and doesn’t fight too hard when his genin team drag him into antics.

After he drops the whole tough guy act with Team 7 early on in the series, he’s surprisingly patient and gentle with them. He answers their questions, calmly corrects them and rarely ever gets mad.

He’s a thousand percent a shambolic mess when he’s first introduced and yet he tries to get it together enough to support team 7. He tries to be there for them.

Without the context of his backstory, Kakashi is still a really compelling character. But when you put it all together, it really does feel quite miraculous that he can be such a loser adult. He didn’t let himself get hardened when it would’ve been so easy to do so. He remains gentle. And I really standby the fact that he is gentle and kind. Those are traits that really shine through to me.

Like just imagine family dinner where Itachi mentions how some Shinobi became rouge and he has to catch him, and his grandpa is like "Fugaku, your offspring is spewing pro Konoha propaganda in my house again."

There is always that one character in every franchise who believes in holding people accountable even if those people are acting on orders or on behalf of a state, and the narrative without fail will try to turn them into an extremist strawman. the fandom will lap it up in favor of pussy characters (Itachi) who take a blindly patriotic stance and are worshipped within the narrative for it. Like no shit sasuke killing danzo would coincide with him going into the “darkness”, and will be played up with ominous music and psychotic laughter even if his actual bad deeds (karin) are still not actually worse than, say, slaughtering an entire clan including civilians and apparently your own “lover” (which everyone on the show praises as heroic)

This is why a lot of people gravitate towards “terrorist” characters even if they do fucked up things, because frankly the narrative is already so obviously rigged against them the second they question patriotism or identify civilians as complicit or decide that holding a high position in a government doesnt give you immunity. Like, you know it’s coming, and none of the “good”, civil, nonviolent characters will be allowed to articulate or embody any of these interesting concepts. At least not fully, and if so they will be probably have an arc where their friends must save them from themselves lol

Chapter 2

After Kakashi leaves Sasuke, neither of them can resist the temptation of one last time together. This begins a push and pull of painful “this is the last time” encounters and difficult conversations.

Orochimaru plays it off like he never intended to abduct Sasuke there and then but at most an HOUR later, he's telling Kabuto they need to kidnap Sasuke NOW while the curse mark is still influencing him, which indicates he very much was there to take Sasuke and got thwarted by Kakashi.

(It's kind of interesting for me to think about this moment alongside the knowledge that Kakashi's father was one of Orochimaru's contemporaries, particularly since we have the canon acknowledgment that "even the legendary sannin paled in comparison" to him (hello?????!!! WHAT was sakumo out here doing?). Orochimaru explicitly states that he hasn't seen Kakashi since he was a child, but now Orochimaru is being stared down by an adult who looks EXACTLY like Hatake Sakumo and who is quite possibly the person who comes closest to approximating the breadth of Orochimaru's unparalleled knowledge of ninjutsu (one thousand jutsu? ONE THOUSAND???) and who is in fact at this moment performing a jutsu that Orochimaru doesn't know and who also possesses the sharingan, which Orochimaru doesn't have. And Orochimaru doesn't know exactly what Kakashi is capable of at this point. So he's standing there debating the wisdom of getting into it with the living incarnation of that one guy who used to decimate Orochimaru's old team in 0.2 seconds flat while infant!Kakashi was strapped to his back in a ninja baby bjorn. And ultimately Orochimaru is like "You know what :) This can wait, actually :)"
