I unravel the rage until it courses through my veins like fuel in an engine. I let it become a part of me, but not all of me. Hot, scorching pain under my skin, under my tongue, under my nails. I let it spread through me— until there is no more "Before" and no more "After." I am her and she is me.

"When I saw you enter, I thought you'd come to say goodbye." "I did." "If that's your wish." I tilt my head and examine his face for humour but find none. "You should be happy. You've spent every waking second here trying to get me to leave." He holds my gaze for a long moment. "Not every second."

“You're not carrying me like this!” I sputter, gesturing to my sling. “Just— just tossed over your back like a sack of potatoes—”. He bends and drops me onto my feet, not helping me at all when I stumble back and nearly fall, disoriented. Instead he releases a slow, frustrated stream of air through his nostrils. "How would you like me to carry you? What would please you, Page Matthews?" I huff and circle him, evaluating my options and ignoring his long-suffering stare. "Piggyback." "Excuse me?" "You heard me." "Like that movie—" "Shut up." "Churlish. "Arrogant."
