Visible Mending Guide
"someone who allows you to rest" is the relationship dynamic of all time
A parent that welcomes you back home after things have fallen apart. A best friend whose voice alone who can make you relax. A spouse who convinces you to stay in bed an extra hour and leave the dishes for later. A stranger who sees you tired and gives up their seat on the train. Augh. The humanity of it
I don't know if this was obvious to everyone else, but I just realised that one of the reasons why the Hobbit is so effective as a children's book is that while Bilbo is an adult, the skills that make him a hero are all those of a child.
By human standards he's child-sized, which makes him unobtrusive and light on his feet. He can slip by unnoticed where bigger people can't.
He's good at playing games, and even cheats (successfully!) in a way that - let's face it - is not so different to how children try to cheat at games. He's polite in a way that's fully comprehensible to children (rather than, say, being able to perform courtly manners). He's quick-witted, but the trick of keeping the trolls talking is also one that would be achievable for a child.
He doesn't have magic powers, he's not a great fighter, and he's not some kind of Chosen One. There's not much that he does that couldn't be done by a ten-year-old, but the story shows just how valuable all those skills and traits are. It's very empowering.
@mori-no-majou why hide this in the tags?
my new motivation idols are childrenâs shows antagonists. no matter how often they fail to defeat 2-5 children every single week, theyâre back at it again the next episode with a barely modified plan and endless optimism. i aspire to live life like the entire plot depends on me trying again

mary oliver, from the deer
anyway people who donât like history are boring
All of these books are queer, but they all have back blurbs that donât say theyâre queer. While this can be a pain if Iâm scouting for queer SFF, it can come in handy for people in a situation where they donât want to be reading queer books openly.Â
Please do note that I donât have hard copies of the books on hand so itâs possible that an author quote or something mentions one being queer (I feel like this isnât super likely, but I donât want to rule it out). Some might also have author biographies mentioning that the author is queer. Also, some may be shelved as LGBT on Goodreads or categorized as queer on Amazon. So if youâre planning on asking for any of these as holiday gifts, I would suggest going to the Amazon page or where ever your relative is likely to buy it from and double check that itâs something youâd be comfortable with sharing openly.Â
I wish I had more pansexual books, but the ones I know of tend to mention queerness in the back description.Â
With the exception of The Spy with the Red Balloon, these are all books I have read or are currently reading. If you want to recommend others, feel free to do so in the replies!
You can find my other queer book recommendations here.
Links to the queer books database (or Goodreads if the book hasnât been added yet) are available below the cut. You can find information on content warnings there.

I hope things get better for you. You deserve to continue to live and see how beautiful things can come out of the worst situations. I hope that you can step back and watch the world from somewhere far away from the midst of the noise and see the trees and the skies and a city from a distant point of view. I hope you find spark of inspiration from a movie or a quote or a song that brings you hope in humanity. I hope you take a break and remember what matters, and forget thoughts that paralyze you like why you donât measure up to someone, or the thought that things will never get better for you. Because those thoughts may feel very real and based on facts when nothing could be more wrong and senseless, and I hope that your life is an endless pattern of realizing that those thoughts are never true like they feel in the moment. I hope one day you can life in a warm house that you decorated nicely with your favorite plants, books, blankets and colors. I hope you continually find joy in reinventing yourself and learning new things because sometimes happiness is found in the journey and in the simplest achievements. I hope that a hopeful, kind voice rises in you that can take on the bully in your head that can grow strong enough to be the only thing you hear. I hope you reach a part of your life where you can look back and be glad that you stayed alive when it was the hardest thing to do. You donât need to know the answers, you donât need to know how to make it better, and sometimes you just need to wait for the storm to pass and just do the best you can while it lasts. Itâs ok to ask for help and itâs ok to feel everything to the fullest, just take care not to live there because itâs a space to reflect and grow, not to live forever. You deserve to see whatâs on the other side of this, and I hope you stay alive to see it.

The light from the sunrise hits the thousands, no millions, of drops of water and makes them sparkle like the meadow of wild flowers is filled with tiny diamonds. You are standing there alone, breathing in the chilly morning air in this early summer morning filled with magic and small wonders.
