What can I commission you to paint?

I’m accepting a limited number of commissions for digital portraits of people (or humanoids). This could include a character from your favourite story or a story you’re writing, a portrait of yourself or a loved one, or even your D&D character (excluding some of the beastlier races)… it’s up to you, so long as you can provide me with a reference photo to paint from!

How do I commission you?

You can commission me by emailing me at [email protected]! Make sure to include the following information in your email:

Who you want me to paint, and what the character is from (if applicable)

What the commission will be used for (e.g. decoration, a gift, a cover for your soon-to-be best-selling novel)

Your decisions regarding:

shoulders-up, waist-up, or full-body;

grayscale or colour;

any departures you want me to make from the reference (e.g. adding scars or changing the clothes or skin colour); 

any background elements you want me to include.

Reference for me to paint off of–

if you’re commissioning a portrait of a loved one I’ll need a photo of them;

if you want me to paint a fictional character, I’ll need a photo of your face-cast in the pose that you want. The closer the photo is to what you want the painting to look like, the better (for me and your pocket).

Your deadline, if you have one.

How much will it cost?

That depends upon what you want! Here are your options:

Face/shoulders-up – $40

Waist-up – $50

Full-body – $60

+$5 for colour (default is greyscale)

+$10 for individual background elements (e.g. a floating half-full bottle of mountain dew, a Victorian lamp-post)

+$20 for a full background (nothing too complex like a full cityscape or anything with lots of depth; a building or some foliage is fine)***

+$5-25 for departures from the reference photo, depending on the significance of the changes (e.g. adding elf ears and some scarring would be $5; changing the character’s skin to purple, giving them horns, and painting them a patchwork coat would be $25).

***Default background is your choice between a solid background or abstract brushstrokes!

Please note that these prices are based on Canadian minimum wage and the amount of time I would expect to spend on each type of painting (i.e. these are not random numbers I’m chucking around, I put a good bit of thought into my pricing).

EXAMPLE PRICING:

Shoulders-up – $40 No significant changes or background elements! TOTAL: $40

Shoulders-up – $40 +$5 for colour +$5 for departure from reference (jewellery changes, eye colour) +$10 for background element (tattoo pattern lineart) TOTAL: $60

Full-body– $60 +$5 for colour +$8 for departure from reference (scarring and facial proportion tweaks) +$20 for full background (bookstore and sidewalk) TOTAL: $93

How do I pay?

I’m only accepting PayPal payments at this time; it’s best for protecting my online anonymity, and it’s safe for the purchaser as well. Make sure that you’re paying the correct amount in Canadian dollars (use an online currency converter if you need to).

Please note that I’ll require a deposit of $10 once I accept your application, just so I can be sure that you are committed and able to pay me through PayPal. This amount will be subtracted from the total upon completion (e.g. if the painting costs $60 total, you’ll pay your deposit of $10 at the beginning, and then the final $50 once it is complete).

Do I need to tip?

It is absolutely not expected, but always appreciated if you’re extra happy with my work!

Will you post my commission on your social media? Can I post it on mine?

I will only ever post a commission on my Tumblr/Instagram/Twitter with your consent. If you choose to post it on yours, please credit me by tagging me—I’m @vagueenthusiast on Tumblr and Twitter, @vagueenthusiast.art on Instagram.

If you plan to include my art in a work that will be sold, we can discuss how I should be credited/whether I should receive a portion of sales.

Do you accept everyone’s commission applications?

I’m only able to take a limited number of commissions. This means that if I get a lot of commission applications at once, I may not take yours this time around. I will let you know as soon as I can whether I am accepting your commission (within a few business days). If I have to turn you down, don’t be offended—it’s got everything to do with my own time constraints and nothing to do with my judgement of the idea you are coming to me with.
