The Rook's Torment

Special thanks to my girlfriend, who posed as the reference for this painting.

This art is primarily about punishment.

I kept thinking about Tantalus from Greek mythology — condemned to stand beneath fruit he could never reach. The boy here doesn't even try to reach for the apples hanging above him. His head is lowered. The punishment has already been accepted.

reference the knowledge of good and evil, something forever inaccessible to him. They also represent a moral standard standing above him, judging him from a distance. Beyond the apples there is light, but that path remains closed.

The flowers between the girl and the boy are my silent presence within the image. The tiger lilies are my personal symbol and favorite flower. One faces the girl, the other faces the boy, observing without intervening. The white carnation is turned toward the girl and reflects her feelings toward the situation.

I also wanted the textures to tell their own story. The girl is covered in spirals — a symbol of continuity, eternity, and connection with the world beyond oneself. The boy is made of rays and straight lines. They originate from the girl's hand, yet remain linear, unable to curve back, branch out, or form deeper connections. He exists in isolation, as the opposite of the spiral.

The carpet represents the material world. Outside of it lies a clear, empty space — calm, purified, and unreachable.

This artwork focuses on capturing a warm, peaceful moment and the unique personality of a very beloved dog. Soft sunlight, rich colors, and textured brushstrokes were used to create a cozy, comforting atmosphere — a small scene filled with calm, affection, and familiarity.

Working on this piece was such an incredibly joyful experience. 💖 From the very beginning, I felt so inspired by the character and the trust placed in me to bring her to life. There was this special kind of flow while drawing the colors, the mood, the expression… everything clicked in a way that reminded me why I love creating art so much.

Hearing how much the final artwork meant to the commissioner genuinely made my entire week. Knowing that someone connects so deeply with something I created is one of the best feelings an artist can experience. ✨

I’m really proud of how the atmosphere turned out the softness, the lighting, the emotion behind the pose. And most of all, I’m grateful for the opportunity to work on such a beautiful character. 💗
