Take a look into the eye of the collider. The STAR detector, home to trillions of particle collisions every year, is one of two enormous ‘digital cameras’ we use at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) to capture snapshots of particles busting open. 

This picture is of the awesomely named Time Projection Chamber, which has been undergoing months of upgrades and maintenance work. During the summer, when the collider wasn’t running, our technicians and engineers checked each cable connection, upgraded the image sensors, and installed new superconducting magnets to steer the particle beams into perfect head-on collisions. 

Methane reduces the density of water, causing ships that would normally float, to instead sink.

Methane, when in gas form, messes with the electrical components of aircraft, causing them to fail and sometimes fall right out of the sky.

This amazing picture is the only one of it’s kind, the furthest photograph every taken of Earth was from NASA’s Voyager, set to leave the solar system. (x)

Cracks in Europa reveal a tilted past

(Sen) - By analyzing the distinctive cracks crisscrossing the icy surface of Europa, NASA scientists have found evidence that this moon of Jupiter likely spun around a tilted axis at some point.

This tilt could influence calculations of how much of Europa’s history is recorded in its frozen shell, how much heat is generated by tides in its underground ocean, and even how long the ocean has been liquid.

"One of the mysteries of Europa is why the orientations of the long, straight cracks called lineaments have changed over time. It turns out that a small tilt, or obliquity, in the spin axis, sometime in the past, can explain a lot of what we see," said Alyssa Rhoden, a postdoctoral fellow with Oak Ridge Associated Universities who is working at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.
