it's really funny how the entire world basically just blew the fuck up six short years ago and nobody wants to admit that that may have had some lasting consequences lmao
like so much of Everything today is premised on the idea that the earth-shattering catastrophe which happened within living memory of everyone older than a third grader has had no meaningful material or psychological effects on the general public and i don't think that's good, lol.
"(some of) the top-line economic indicators (sorta) recovered (in most places) so everything is fine and we don't need to talk about it" is not a sustainable framework for interfacing with reality
"why is everyone so angry and paranoid now?" "why is politics so dysfunctional now?" "why is [x] [y] and [z] now? blah blah blah"
2020:
hey everyone "I" have something to show "you"
Having a "stupider people have done this" attitude about the things you want to do can open so many doors

god's weakest soldier is scrolling tumblr instead of being productive or participating in any of their hobbies
Maybe if I just work harder, this empty cup will pour again
Maybe the cup needs a bit of time to rest and refill?
Maybe the cup needs to lock the fuck in???
i think the key difference between george lucas’s star wars and disney’s star wars is that lucas is a man with an ideology. someone with a point of view, and all that entails. which comes with ideas of revolution, anti-imperialism, challenging the status quo, cultural appropriation and racist stereotypes. complex and contradictory ideas because that’s how artists are: complex and complicated people. disney is not. disney is a corporation. a corporation can’t have ideology, because ideology defeats the purpose of profit. and when the only thing you do is to turn on the movie manufacturing machine before you sit down and plan what ideas are you trying to convey to the audience, then your results are going to be washed out corporate garbage. and because when you’re a giant corporation who only cares about selling to the widest audience possible, you can’t take sides. you can’t decide on an idea. because you want to sell your product to people who are on the entire political spectrum. which results in movies without ideology, without purpose, without soul.
I have been looking for this post for years after I came across it and it’s finally here and I need to reblog this because it is absolutely and entirely accurate.
#as I always say: lucas was making a samurai film and a ww2 flying ace film and a western film and adding laser swords#because he fundamentally LIKED samurai films and dambusters films and westerns and 40’s adventure serials#but disney are making a ‘star wars film’ and adding nothing because it already had laser swords and they have nothing else to say#xerox of a xerox baybeeeee (via harrietvane)
I never thought I would be siding with the pope’s involvement in politics and cheering him on. I will say that.

Ok so I just found out about your Tumblr and all I gotta say is: Thank You. As someone who grew up watching the Star Wars films on DVD before the sequels came out, I do love the franchise (tho I haven't been keeping up with it as of late, having only finished the final season of Clone Wars) but it's been increasingly hard to find any videos talking about the new trilogy without the "woke" comments. So seriously, thank you for actually going through the FLAWS of it instead of meaning "woke" crap
Thank you for the kind words! If I have any calls to action out there, my friends, if you ever encounter someone who unironically uses the word "woke," ask them what the hell "woke" means. Demand a definition. Ask them why it is bad. Force them to admit that they don't like seeing non-white, non-cis, non-male people in media because that seems to be the only consistent thing about it. If they try to say it's "forced diversity," ask what exactly is forced about it, why diversity is bad, etc. Push back on this shit. Get assholes on the defensive. I can explain why I hate something pretty damn well, I feel, so if they can't do it without using shitty buzzwords then perhaps they shouldn't be trying to do critical analysis.

Ahhh, the shot of this random guy helping Superman stand up warms my heart.
One thing many modern superhero films miss out on, I feel is the Superhero's relationship to the random people they save. Many MCU films have escalated to the point of numbers so high its unthinkable- and they've lost that personal touch. Moments like this are a visual metaphor for what makes the hero keep fighting, keep going, keep standing up. There's a reason this scene from Spiderman II is one of my favorites ever.
To add to OP’s point: Quantumania visualizes the death of an entire timeline (trillions of people) as a line dissolving. Add to that the lack of superhero fights in cities and the gradual removal of civilian supporting casts, and you end up with movies without stakes and personality
