From the moment Merlin stepped into Camelot, he spent his life making things easier for everyone around him. That simply who he was—an incredibly altruistic person, always putting the people he loved first, and sometimes even helping people he couldn't stand.
The more I think about everything he did and the way he really really cared from the bottom of his heart, the more it genuinely makes me want to cry. He never gave up.
Even with Morgana, he stayed with her for as long as he possibly could. He didn't turn his back on her until she chose to hurt his people—and that was his limit. Honestly, I think if Morgana had kept her distance from Arthur and the others, he probably would've kept trying to save her. He would've believed there was still hope.
And then there's Uther. Merlin despised him, yet he still protected him. Most people would've stood there and let him be gone Without getting their hands dirty. But he didn't. He protected him for reasons: Arthur wasn't ready to lose his father, and arthur himself wasn't ready to rule just yet.
And that's what gets me. Merlin was always carrying everyone else's pain before his own. Then you put everything he did for Arthur on top of all that, on a whole different level.
Thinking about it now, I finally understand why he made so many of the choices he did. They weren't easy choices— not at all
