What drives me insane about Merlin and Arthur's relationship is that Arthur woke up startled and flustered with Merlin's name on his lips, and his wife didn't even seem the slightest bit surprised. The most realistic thing Gwen could have said was, "What happened?" But instead, it was as if she already knew EXACTLY what to do in that situation and simply tried to reassure him

Realization that every time someone dear to Merlin's heart dies, he'd console himself with the fact that Arthur's heart was still beating and they were still breathing the same air. Every time someone dies, his heart sank, but he kept saying and repeating in his mind, "I have Arthur." He put all his faith, patience, heart, mind and magic into it. so that the awareness of everything he had gone through wouldn't drag him to depth of hell, and even at the last moment while he was holding arthur's body lay in despair and hope. Merlin remained in denial about everything that had happened until the dragon told him that it was over. I cannot even describe his emotions, it was all written all over him .
