The two sides of this are "I don't like censorship or bullying" vs. "It's activism to harass people".

They can certainly both be self-righteous activists on the surface, and there are certainly hypocrites describing themselves as proshippers, but this is not a Both Sides issue. This is good values vs. security theater at best and intentional harassment for funsies at worst.

my hypothesis is that a lot of people like this are searching for some sort of universal principle or algorithm they can personally apply to consuming media and engaging in fandom that maximizes "good." i just don't think that's feasible.
