I love John as a 'redeemed villain' character because he's literally the one archetype of villain who basically never gets redeemed in media. He doesn't have a tragic backstory, he's not morally grey, his only motive as the King in Yellow is causing suffering and madness, and yet he still gets redeemed. It's refreshing to finally see a 'pure evil' villain not just be treated as a plot device and instead as an actual character who can choose to change.
