Clark was already living in a liminal space psychologically (stagnant not wanting to move forward) and literally (the furniture store) before he found the Backrooms. So, it makes sense that he would not be completely frightened by it and be more fascinated and intrigued.

im a big fan of the idea that the backrooms are an allegory for what dissociation does to your brain. the backrooms represents what happens to your brain when you go through repeated trauma and how it will remember stuff, but not quite exactly how you want it to. a place that is supposed to feel like home and tries to remember it being cozy and comforting but it can’t. all it can remember clearly is the “feelings” you felt as a person. not even your own identity is completely known in the backrooms. because that’s just how much trauma will mess and distort your brain.

and if the backrooms remembers people through how they are seen by others then Mary’s still life is stuck in the “interrogation room” because the only people left to perceive her are the ASYNC scientists. she wanted to help people, and she couldn’t do that. her mother is gone. now clark is gone, too. the rooms remember all the bad parts of her life and it remembers her at the point where all those things caught up to her

I feel you should be able to criticize the fandom for focusing so much on the young white side character with 3 scenes tops AND criticize the film for its unintentional microaggressions towards its main Black man

if the backrooms can only remember people based on how they are seen by others, then captain clark is so uncanny because people around the real clark view him in a negative light. but the real clark doesn’t see himself that way, so when he looks at captain clark, he doesn’t see anything monstrous, he just sees clark. it’s why he tells captain clark “we don’t have to change”. he views his views his still life as an extension of himself, and he wants so badly to believe that he is fine the way he is. if captain clark has to change, then so does he. but change is so uh a heavy weight to bear, even if you know it’s necessary. it’s easier to look within, see a twisted soul, and call it beautiful

It's interesting how, culturally, we've gone from workplace comedy (The Office) to workplace existential dread (Backrooms and Severance). Can't imagine why.
