"can you be a fan of a video game you havent played" discourse is stupid, because plenty of people who played the game have some of the dumbest fucking takes ive ever seen

#i would argue the idea that you can be a fan without playing the game is somewhat connected to the fact that so many people have shit takes #but the answer to the original question is yes anyways because fandom is arbitrary and evidently doesn't require you to understand the text #it all fucking comes back to Annihilation and Decoding Metaphor i think the argument of that video is so simple yet so widely applicable #i dont care about the “fan” argument because ultimately its fandom discourse which never goes anywhere or does anything #and i have no stake in it as someone mostly outside fandom anyways #but i want people to understand that gameplay is the story of the game. That is the text.#A playthrough video is a different text which shares similar content but has a degree of seperation from the original medium #which alters the way the story is told which in turn alters the story itself.#and “”“lore”“” is only a small part of story that people need to stop caring about so much. It informs the story but should replace it #lore is the content of a story. gameplay is the character of a story. and character is more important to the message of a story #and lore is not needed you can tell a story about a sports game even if it doesn't have “lore."#because the gameplay itself should be able to tell a compelling story if the game is good.#and to be clear this isn't me saying we should entirely ignore that part of a game #im saying that lore should be considered in context of how it is conveyed INSIDE THE TEXT.#instead of being treated like all of it came zero context tweets fucking dumbledore is gay style #THE MEDIUM IS THE FUCKING MESSAGE OKAY!!!#rant over sorry
