TO Â WHOM Â DOES Â YOUR Â HEART Â BELONG Â ?
your heart belongs to the stars
you are lost in thought. you dwell on the workings of the world, you observe your feelings with an air of silence. you are contemplative in nature, and find yourself pausing before taking action. you have the gift to recognize the world for the beauty it holds in the quiet moments.it's okay to take your time doing things, your soul has been here from the beginning and will remain until the end. you have all the time in the world.

"It's rather unusual to receive an invitation from Danzo-sama himself. What exactly do you want from me?"

This one may play the air-headed simpleton, and with others it may even work, but it certainly didnât work on DanzĹ. He knew far too much of what the toad sage had done in the past during his many stints away from Konohaâthings that would be considered treasonous if he was anything other than one of Hiruzenâs beloved whelps.
Such misdemeanours included never once returning to the village in over a decade, even while acting on his own volition, tracking criminals he was never authorised to track. Anyone else would have been branded a missing-nin by now... but perhaps with Hiruzen gone and the question of the next Hokage on everyoneâs tongues, he could finally slip the reins on this prodigal son.
âIt is a relief to see you in good health,â DanzĹ stated cordially, and gestured for the man to take a seat at the table where tea had been prepared, beside where he himself proceeded to kneel. âA shame, however, that you didnât make it in time to save the late Sandaime. He would have been delighted to see one student was still on his side.â
That he didnât actually answer Jiraiyaâs question at all was not lost on him. He could do with exercising patience and decorum for a change.

WHATâS YOUR UNDERLYING MOTIF?
the lightning rod
whether itâs your turbulent nature, your flash quick mind, or the air of unknown about you, your undercurrent is the lightning rod. you are somewhat unpredictable, but if we unravelled weâd see you know exactly what youâre doing, but it makes you feel less vulnerable to pretend it wasnât planned. some people stay back from you, but others would follow you cross country, for the very same reason. they donât know enough about you. the difference is in who wants to learn more. keep your golden nature, itâs exciting, but donât be afraid to admit what you know. matshona dhliwayo said âlightning strikes but does not roarâ your bite will always be worse than your bark, keep that close to your chest.

This one was soft, for a member of the Cross clan. He knew this through observation and his knowledge of their grisly history, and while this softness didnât make him a good fit for ROOT, he was loyal and hard-working. Unusually affable, too, which must have been why he was even entertaining this small-talk at present.
âA keen observation,â he said in a gentle monotone, voice like a shadow. âAlthough I prefer to think that they are the small things, that they are all part of one great tapestry. One whole. Consider a tree, and each individual leaf that makes up that tree. Those seemingly tiny components, and yet that is what makes the tree capable of breathing life out into the world...â
... Ah. He was getting rather poetic about this, wasnât he? Rather out of character for him, particularly in front of a shinobi he hardly even knew outside of gathered data. Heâd best nip that in the bud.
âIs there anything I can help you with?â
dokuhebiâ:
He doesnât need to reveal a great deal of emotion for them to catch the displeasure in his tone. The little reprimand that easily manages to jar them, and all their pride and deepest engrained belief that they needed to be the best at everything. So quick to claim the opinions of others did not matter much to them, yet even quicker to put on a show if people were looking, or to prove people wrong when words were unflattering. Being the Hokageâs genius renegade only proved a fun title to carry until the isolation they felt so terribly throughout youth became deafeningly more true and acute. Was this simply a case of their more primitive self deeming any attention was good attention? They dare not to believe they may have fallen so low in to the more basic human instincts. To shatter their own illusion that they had stepped so very far from the design they were born in to, that they were not quite as self created as they may have liked. A careful balance, of wanting to experience it all, to have it all, yet potentially losing everything instead. Still, what was worse? Admitting to sloppiness? Or admitting to intentional sloppiness for attention? Their smug expression only falters for a second, but it is a second they know Danzo will be able to detect. That his displeasure was contagious, even if they are quick to replace that genuine amusement with something more put on, masterfully so, but false all the same. âSound advice, if only it occurred to me without your ingenious wisdom,â they say, a sarcastic drawl, as their gaze flickers to the the darkened hallway from which the man came, as if inspecting to see if anyone else was in fact coming, or perhaps, feigning vigilance for a moment of broken eye contact, âit was of course, out of my hands by the time I realized others were catching on, you speak as if my capture was purposeful. Surely you donât think so very little of me.â They watch next as he begins to unravel a key from his cloak, golden eyes finally perking up again at the first sign of freedom. As much fun as it had been terrorizing those who dared try confine them like a rabid dog, it was certainly more entertaining to be rid of all the heavy and weighted restraints. His chiding about their scathing gaze - something undeniably purposeful at times - has them scoffing softly. A wry huff of laughter that falls from their muzzled lips almost silkily. âThe day wolves hide their teeth to avoid scaring the sheep, will be the day I sit pretty and apologetic Danzo-sama,â the serpent says, a sound of indigence carrying the rasp to their voice, a subtly exaggerated breath following, as if it were tiresome to be told the same thing over and over - for they certainly werenât about to start heeding that continued bit of advice. Not when Hiruzen told them worryingly, not when their comrades told them jokingly, and not when Danzo told them with a bite of logic, âwhy am I to soften myself for the timid? They will find reasons to hate or vilify me either way, I ought to reap the benefits of my own reputation, if I am destined to earning the consequences regardless.â They watch as he steps in to their cell, the first shinobi to do so confidently, the rest having entered this space as if stepping in to a cage housing lion. As if even chained to the floor, merely setting foot on this ground had made it the serpents domain. His hands move to rid them of the mouth mask, the slight markings of red grazing the side of porcelain white skin on the corners of their mouth and cheekbones, a clear struggle. They draw back the moment he pulls the mask forward as if to aid in its removal, a slight shake of their head to pry the ink black hair stuck on the material off and back to themself. A handless endeavor while still shackled. âIt may be ambitious to try and recreate Senseiâs thoughts, even for someone like you,â they say, for they could not admit they felt it in their own best interest to have their mentor remember the little altercation. To have slashed the final bit of pride the man may have still held for them. How they stubbornly try and believe they no longer care for his approval, yet can not swallow the bitter taste that coats their tongue everytime they see the look in his eyes. The way his face had fallen, looking both horrified, and yet not shocked. Not out of his realm of imagination then, that they could do unspeakable things. He hadnât been wrong about them, but it would have certainly brought them more peace knowing he had been.
The plan is evidently well devised for such short notice, a quick replacement between the real serpent and a decoy using a masterful henge. Chakra indistinguishable from one another, when Danzo has completed a simple looking seal, that is truly anything but simple. There is no cautiousness to their own behaviour when he moves to place a hand to their body, when they watch ink run down his arms in animation and carve a brand in to their chest. A strange sensation, unpleasant but not ever falling in to actual discomfort. Empty is the decoys personality, a perfect soldier reporting for duty, ready to resume a role of falsity. Impressive, if not eerie with the puppet like demeanor. The key is then placed in to their slender hand, when the shackles are moved from their own person to their current doppelgangers. There isnât even a slight delay, before locking the other shinobi inside the cage behind them to follow Danzo out. For their life, simply put, was worth more than the operative now taking their place. Something they should not sit as well with them as it does. Yet it is not out of vanity they deem it so. Not at all. It is perhaps, a sense of entitlement. That having earned their usefulness through blood, sweat and tears, what they paid in the past earning them a future favor from a man as resourceful as the Shimura. Following him out, they are quick to place themself under henge, taking the image of the man they had just traded places with, as to merge rather seamlessly with Danzoâs trick of swapping chakra signatures. The way he words himself, âremain with me tonightâ, makes them feel more like a scolded dog than anything else. A nuisance that had been too riled up or badly mannered, and was now his little responsibility to contend with. As if they are being passed between Hiruzen and Danzoâs care and custody, a menacing wild pet to contend with. âAnd where exactly will we be staying while I fall under your supervision?â they ask, the irritation they felt to the belittling comment not largely noticeable in their voice, yet not entirely cast aside either, âmost of my hiding places have been uncovered, I assume you donât want to risk bringing me in to one of yours.â
Given a less inconvenient situation than this one, there might have been something like a sliver of amusement at their antics; however, what this situation spells for DanzĹ in particular is enough to snuff any inkling of levity right out. Orochimaruâs experiments are vital to him, and for them to get caught and show the absolute opposite of remorse spells their imminent exile, whether that exile is self-declared or mandated by Hiruzen. All in all, it poses a great inconvenience for this bright star of progress to end up distanced from him.
So he doesnât offer even the softest huff of amusement at their sarcastic remarks. They need to know that they have committed a grave error, and judging by the cracks in their overly proud visageâthat indication of a superiority that delighted in causing chaos and terror wiltingâis slight but certainly enough.
They understand, and so the Shimura feels no further need to labour the point. Their continued alliance requires careful handling, especially if his suspicions regarding their insecurities prove to be correct. That in losing the faith and affections of Hiruzen, something fundamental in them was now disrupted, adrift in emotions they donât know how to control and thus have manifested in petty acts of spite and cries for attention.
How foolish of Hiruzen it had been, to favour this one so specifically. DanzĹ was afflicted with no shadow of a doubt that his feelings for the young serpent had been genuine, if not confused. Pity, sorrow, guilt, a hint of fatherly instinctâŚÂ
He couldnât understand it, personally.Â
But that didnât mean he was incapable of seeing the bright glimmer of opportunity in that misguided love, now that it had been withdrawn. It didnât mean he was incapable of supplanting his old friend, in some capacity. Of course, that would require subtlety and careful treatmentâclearly quite the opposite of where Orochimaruâs psyche was directing them at present.
âAh, but you could have continued to feast on those sheep if youâd acted with subtlety. We are shinobi, after all. Our inner workings must appear on the surface as natural as a ripple on the water pushed on by the breeze. And like that breeze, whether or not we are blamed for those ripples matters not. Only that we performed our intention in moving the tides.â
Why is it, Hiruzen, that Iâm teaching this basic fact to your finest student? Why is it that Iâm the one coddling them now?
He sighs, in what is perhaps a greater show of genuine feeling than he would normally show. On that note, he certainly is saying more than he usually would, too. All in the name of seizing the opportunity.
âI donât think so little of you, Orochimaru, but I do believe youâre currently being blinkered by your emotions. The sting of betrayal will do that, even to the most stalwart shinobi.âÂ
After executing his plan with swift efficiency, the two spare no time in retracing DanzĹâs earlier steps through the dank corridor, and the shadows that had accompanied him, having completed their cover-up tasks, follow close behind like voiceless wraiths. With the important part completed, and Orochimaruâs chakra seeming not to have moved beyond the confines of their former cell, he breathes deeply of the air outside, crisp and fragrant.
âYou didnât reveal the connection of these investigations to me, and for that you have my gratitude.â
That much, at least, is more than mere flattery. Without his Cursed Tongue Eradication Seal, Orochimaru would have been at full liberty to lay the blame at his feet. To say that those experiments were all ordered by him. As adept as DanzĹ was at covering his tracks, there were certain things that would only draw more suspicion had they been smothered overâsuch as allocated funding for facilities Hiruzen knew to be in use, along with numerous other little details to exploit. Even he couldnât pull every string in the arsenal, as much as he desired to.Â
âMy assumption is that you wonât be attempting to claw back forgiveness or the right to remain in Konohagakure, yes?â He asks the question, but his matter-of-fact tone gives it more the air of a statement. Something about that continued attitude of theirs rankles him, but given their clearly wounded pride and their fall from whatever glory theyâd thus far perceived in infamy, heâll just have to swallow it. A snide remark very nearly makes it past his lips when Orochimaru adjusts their appearance, something about them being capable of subtlety after all, but in light of his following statement, itâs better that he didnât. âThat being the case, I donât see why all bridges should be burned. Your ambitions are your own, and conflict in no way with my own goals. Iâd like to continue working together closely. You neednât worry about where we go, or what risk it may pose to me, only that you keep the secret as close as the blood in your veins.â
Indeed, even if they were to be followed at all in the journey they embarked through shadowy streets, even if the interludes of emerging into a somewhat lighter black as they were forced into the open drew curious eyes, nothing good would come of succumbing to that curiosity. DanzĹ didnât go anywhere without faithful ROOT operatives maintaining a silent vigil at every corner or in the boughs of every seemingly vacant tree, ready to detain or alter the experiences of the curious without so much as an order whispered on his part.
Thus do they make it beyond Konohaâs boundary with no incident. Even when they delve ever deeper into the surrounding woods with silent leaps from branch to branch, far from the beaten track more frequently favoured by shinobi returning from their missions, only the minute and occasional rustles of an arm or shoulder grazing against fine branches or hanging leaves can be heard.
By the time DanzĹ gestures for them to stop, hours have passed. Only he is capable of making this journey in such a short time, for heâd discovered it long, long ago, and journeyed here many times thereafter. By all outside appearances, one would assume it to be an ordinary shrine. Not even double his own height in any direction, and carved with ornate images of the creature that was alleged to dwell deep in thick forested areas such as this, it may seem baffling at first that this could be considered a shelter in any sense. But it was some miles back that the ghosts on their trail had split off to secure the perimeter, for even they werenât permitted to see this place.
It occurs to the Shimura, of course, that bringing the serpent here could be considered an egregious display of faith in them. However, for all heâd claimed they need not worry about the security of their refuge for the untold stretch of time it would take to iron everything out, there had never been any such thing as âtoo carefulâ in his eyes. And this place was about as secure as one could ever hope for. A secret he now shared with only one.
Upon approaching the aged wooden door, he pricks his thumb and weaves a number of hand seals concealed to their eye, then places his right palm on the door. It slides open, revealing to the pair a descending stone stair choked with moss in every crack, which DanzĹ gestures them to descend so that he may seal it shut behind them.Â
They are plunged into darkness, forced to feel their way down the stair. But when they reach the bottom, the narrow tunnel opens out into a large cavern filled with ornate pillars and iconography wrought into the natural stone. Trees that emit a pale glow light up the dim space a little, but the main source of light is situated in the roof of the grotto itself, where despite all logic, a crystal clear pond sits. One would almost think it was a mirror, if not for the occasional ripples caused by some unknown force. Tinged lavender, and with the reflection of the moon and stars reflected inâor perhaps contained withinâits glassy surface, it lends a definite otherworldliness to this underground temple and its verdant surroundings that banishes the idea of it ever being wrought by human hands.
Treading silently over a ground covered with inexplicably vibrant, cropped, springy grass, DanzĹ leads them over a bridge spanning a clear stream. Comparatively speaking, he doesnât quite seem to fit into such a wondrous place, or perhaps itâs the absolute lack of ceremony on his part that gives that impression. But they soon find themselves at the door of a small house raised from the ground on decking, which he invites Orochimaru to enter with a polite gesture.Â
âI trust youâll find this âhiding placeâ secure enough.â
konohamusesâ:
His head goes to the side, noticing the tensing in Danzoâs jaw and he raises an eyebrow, guessing at the cause. The smallest hint of a smile appears at one corner of his lips, and Hiruzen follows his gaze to the span of the village. âHow lucky indeed,â he says, chuckling. âAre you looking for a position less in the shadows, Danzo? Would you prefer to be at my side in the treetops rather than at the roots?â
A small scoff, something that could perhaps, maybe be described as an amused sound, hisses through his teeth.
âI will only ever be whatever Konoha requires of me,â he replies, ignoring whatever insipid thing Hiruzen might be implying. âSurely you donât think men like us are in the business of doing things according to personal preference.â
I would much sooner maintain those healthy roots to ensure the branches donât wither.Â
I would.
"It's your birthday." He lets the statement hang in the air for a moment. Of course he knows. Hiruzen has access to that sort of information, even for Danzo. "So, happy birthday. I'd give you the day off, but I'm not sure if you'd even want it. Regardless, if you do, it's yours." A pause as he strokes his chin. "Hmm, what would Danzo want most?"
[ classified memos | always accepting ] [ @konohamusesâ ]
âIndeed,â he states blandly, attention largely fixed on the documents heâs working through. Or so it seems. âYou have reminded me every year since we were boys.â
So foolish. Do the shadows ever âtake the day offâ? He thinks not. Only the obnoxious sun has a habit of eliminating the space in which they can operate when itâs at its full height. With the barest of sighs through his nose, DanzĹ casts a stony gaze up at the other.
âPerhaps I could stretch to a drink.â Â
With an old friend, he fails to add. And of course, spoken as if heâd be the one doing Hiruzen a favour.

Danzo-Kun has been a bad bad boomer. Time for Pein to rip out this old fuckerâs soul and send him to the Pure Lands. Happy Birthday Lord Danzo!
[ classified memos | always accepting ] [ anonymous ]
âThank you for your well wishes...â
âI cannot allow you to live.â
"Enough!" The instructor's voice shouts out and the boy stops his attack on his assault on the boy's face. He stares at his own damaged hands, his knuckles bruised and blisters are slightly forming on the joints on his fingers. His opponent lays on the ground unconscious but alive. After being told to sit down on the bench and wait for the next match to finish, he puts on his slightly damaged lenses. "Lord Danzo... I didn't see you there. Will they be alright? I hope that I didn't kill them..."
[ classified memos | always accepting ] [ @thatsneakymedic ]
DanzĹ had been watching from the sidelines, silently assessing how the newest inductees were progressing. Usually he didnât engage with them unless absolutely necessary, but the young boyâs concerned words were sufficient enough cause for a response.
âYou must learn to clear your mind and heart of such concerns. If your mission is to kill, then kill you must. If you must sacrifice yourself, then sacrifice you must. No hesitation.â
But he could concede that this time, at least, it wasnât a mission. Kabuto had fought until the very moment he was instructed to stop, and so he could safely say that the boy was doing well, despite his soft heart that still bled too freely. He needed to learn how not to let such things even come into consideration, but there was plenty of time for that.
For a moment longer, he simply observed the boy, noting that the frames of his glasses were skewed, and the lenses scuffed. Another sentimental attachment of his.
âWill those need to be replaced?â
konohamusesâ:
âCarefree? You think it carefree?â
âWould you call a bird that would ride a wind despite dangers and predators that wind may bring carefree? Some may call it foolish, but I prefer a kinder word. Faithful, perhaps. True maybe.â An eyebrow raises. âOr perhaps the bird simply prefers this wind over the other.â A beat. âYou have proven⌠reliable over the years.â
You pull off the carefree image all too well, fool. Even now.
Thereâs a tensing in his jaw, a movement so minute that it would take those who knew himâwho cared to know himâto notice it. He hated that Hiruzen probably would. He hated that even now, numerous bids to undermine the manâs authority and assassination attempts later, he could still say things like that.
âYou always were a creature of habit,â he states neutrally, and casts his one hazel eye over the sprawling village. âHow lucky you are, to have this unseen yet dutiful wind do your heavy lifting while you bask in the treetops.â
konohamusesâ:
âOh, you knowâŚâ
âWhen a bird rides on the same wind south for the winter each year, it does learn that that same wind going south each winter will not lead it astray.â
âHow touching.â
âAnd what of the predators that wind may bring on its crest? The concealed dangers? Do you still ride that wind, oh carefree bird?â

âSo you trust me, do you Hiruzen?â
Since he overheard that droning lecture to the Senju princess.
infobitchâ:
â-! Is he inviting her into a club? Into a secret club, mayhaps? Is said club gonna have a ton of insider ninja and intel about people around the village, and can she feast on it?
âI play for all teams, yes Sir! Do you? Because I think you can really put a cane to good use if you use it with the right person!â Thereâs a sharp bound up, arms outstretched. Either way, this is STILL technically intel time, âcause theyâre talking.Â
âCan I know, real quick, how do you feel about close-toe shoes? And how do you feel about your father, do you resent him? Also, do you really not like squishy sweets? What if the Third fed it to you by mouth? Please tell me, itâs SOY important!âÂ
How does she know things? HOW does she know things?Â
Wrong answer.
He takes a cordial step back from the sudden intrusion of his personal space, the tap of his cane just a touch sharper than it needed to be as he holds it as far from his body as the length of his arm allows, establishing a point that she must not proceed beyond. Thatâs the only âgood useâ his cane will be put to today.
âAh, so your first priority isnât the mission? Thatâs a shameââ
The sudden interruption has DanzĹ bristling inwardly, a lance of hot irritation that stabs through him but amounts to little more than a slightly more downward turn of his mouth. What... what? What relevance did any of this have? But the more pertinent question, perhapsâhow does she know that he dislikes wabarimochi?
Thatâs the only real question here, of course. And thatâs classified information.
âI donât have any feelings on such trivial matters,â he answers simply after a moment, expression stonily neutral while his mind races.Â
This girl knows things. And thatâs unacceptable. But also very useful. He canât let her go.
âCome closer.â
