Horror for the bourgeoisie requires uniformity - almost a kind of minimalist ideal - in its appearance. Ironic, then, that Guadagnino’s Suspiria was given an Independent Spirit Award in 2019 for its cinematography, which flies in the face of Argento’s original film. The sameness in appearance across these works is so prevalent that it functions as a visual shorthand for a product that bears a resemblance to genre works of the past but more importantly signals to the consumer not just a more expensive, sleek, desirable version of genre but a socially-acceptable, ‘legitimate’ one. The remake model is merely a platform for cinematic house-flipping, the sale of a now-fashionable neighborhood, rebranded.”
