lmao but have we talked about how painful the hours after thomas ran into the maze must've been for newt. to have full awareness that your two best friends and this boy that makes you feel things are now dead and gone. that no one survives a night in the maze so there's no chance that they could be alive. that in the morning he says to chucky that see i told you they weren't gonna make it. and he came to that conclusion after hours of internal agony, hours of sitting and thinking of the last conversation he had with alby, the last snarky thing minho said to him, the last question tommy asked him. how when those things happened newt never thought that it would be the last time and now it is. now they're gone and they left him here. left him to do what he's not sure because how is he supposed to survive without them. how is he supposed to lead the gladers when he's so unsure of himself. so he swallows the reality of them not coming back and it's such a big pill, such an overwhelming feeling, so incredibly devastating that he wishes he could sleep his life away but he doesn't. he stays up all night, thinking, screaming in his own mind, reliving those last few seconds.

thinking about newt and the heart stopping, unexplainable fear that must've gripped him in the seconds before thomas ran into the maze. a boy with a dangerous combination of bravery and stupidity, a boy who asks too many questions, a boy who has changed so much in the few days he's been here, a boy with the most familiar unfamiliar brown eyes newt has ever seen. newt knows that he doesn't remember thomas, that there's no possibility of them having any memories about each other, but, but when he first looked into his eyes, standing alongside alby as he laughed at his faceplant. newt looked into thomas's eyes and felt something shift inside of him. he knew those eyes, he knew what they looked like when they laughed. he knew thomas, knew that similar feeling of reckless hope thomas inspired in everyone around him. so when newt reached his hand out, the edges of thomas's shirt slip between his fingers, as he watched him get swallowed by the maze, he felt that unshakable, strange fear and all he could think was

the movies tried to make the reveal of newt not being immune more emotional but somehow at the same time i feel like the way it was revealed took away a lot of the weight of newt not being immune that it had in the books... twice.
