Mina reading her husband's bizarre work journal: Wow I hope vampires aren't real. But if they are obviously we have to kill this guy.
funny how much both count dracula and van helsing got so drastically mischaracterized in pop culture. no, van helsing isnt some big macho who hunts monsters as a full time job, he is an old doctor who was asked for help by his favorite ex student with a puppy crush bc a woman he loves is dying. no, the count isnt a handsome mystical love interest with a sad backstory about some lost love, he is a bisexual disaster who gets no bitches and crawls on the walls while trying to buy real estate in london.

At this point if they actually wanted to make a unique retelling of Dracula, they should have Quincey as the main character, market it as a tragic Western/British romance, and then halfway through drop us into the plot of Dracula

everytime i see a "hot" version of dracula or van helsing i just remember that THATS how they actually look like in the book:
i think what i really like about today’s dracula entry is van helsing going “btw mina your husband isn’t insane, there’s an actual, literal vampire out there. and obviously that’s not great but his mental health is fine”
and idk, as someone who is being negatively impacted by The Horrors, i found that comforting. of course you feel bad. there’s a vampire.
Gods, I love Mina. She reads her husband's journal, detailing his horrific stay with the Count. She's unsure whether or not to believe it, and who can blame her? But she knows Jonathan. She connects the dots between his knowledge of the Count coming to England and the man they saw that upset Jonathan. And what does she do next? She starts transcribing. She knows that knowledge and communication are vital tools against any threat. Even if this turns out to be nothing, she wants to be prepared.
Contrasted with Van Helsing with his secrets and withholding information as long as possible.
Mina's the real hero of this story and I love her.
There's something hilarious about how so much subsequent media has positioned Vampires and Werewolves as, like, binary opposite entities, and then you read Dracula (1897) and realize that wolves are that guy's preferred solution to every problem. You'd say something to Dracula about "ah yes, werewolves, vampires' great eternal enemies," and he'd just be like "you mean my subcontractors?"

what people think dracula by bram stoker is about vs the actual plot:
