I became a father 13 years ago. Prior to becoming a father, I was frightened by fatherhood. This sounds dramatic, but it’s 100% true. I grew up fatherless. I have very few childhood memories of my dad and my mother didn’t remarry until I was a teenager. Although I didn’t have a father figure, my male family members and friends’ fathers gave me a rough idea of fatherhood and manhood. None of these men ever took interest in me, and I can’t say that I wanted them to at that time. Growing up, I never really understood what it was to be a man. This lack of understanding and lack of a father figure fueled my fear.....

Picture this: You’re in a play area with your child and 6 other children. Your child and another kid are playing with trains. You proudly watch at a distance as they nicely play. As you proudly keep watch, you puff out your chest and say, “I’ve got me a good citizen right there.”
