Happy pride month! Please remember to include disabled people in your festivities this year! This includes:
- Hiring sign language interpreters
- Ensuring venues are step free
- Making dedicated sensory safe spaces
- Providing free masks
- Including braille or audio described signage
- Using plain language in speeches
Yes itβs more work, but pride is for everyone, itβs needs to be inclusive.
Also, if you are a non-disabled person reading this, please help advocate for accessibility. It gets tiring being the only person fighting for basic access rights.

Hiring a mobile changing places toilet for people who canβt use standard accessible toiletsβ these are fitted with an adult size changing table, hoist and room for a someone with a large wheelchair and two carers to move around in.
If your event is on grass create pathways with mats to avoid people getting stuck in mud if itβs rained recently
Covering cables in a way that allows wheelchairs users to go over them independently and painlessly (please install a ramps if you use those ones that look like speed bumps)
Wheelchair access to any stages especially if acts are inviting members of the audience on stage at any pointβ¦ maybe you have no wheelchair users performing, but you never will if itβs not accessible
Publish details about the length and surface of any march. Is it hilly? Is the road covered in potholes? How long is it?

Reading Artifical Conditon again is so funny. Imagine you are a young scientist who has decided to hire a security specialist to help you in a risky endeavor that could break or make your career. something i've noticed that has become really annoying in the past 10 years or so is this fad of what i've been calling, for lack of a better word, "structural whataboutism." it's that thing where, when faced with a concrete, resolvable problem in your community, your answer is to blame it on a vast, unsolvable issue of structural inequality and then throw up your hands. "there's trash all over the ground in this corner of the park" becomes "well, that's where MEN OF COLOR congregate after their 12-HOUR GRAVEYARD SHIFTS and i'm not going to support a CARCERAL SOLUTION to a CAPITALISTIC PROBLEM. WE NEED TO ELIMINATE POVERTY AND THE SUBJUGATION OF THE WORKING CLASS" and it's like okay but sis. someone still has to go pick up the trash. we don't need a carceral solution, we need more trash cans. you're not going to eliminate poverty and the subjugation of the working class and even if ya did, there would still be trash on the ground. how any of this passes for radicalism within their peer groups i simply don't understand. it's radical laziness more than anything else
I was on a canoe trip once with a river biologist who worked for the county. After we found and removed a car tire, she started talking about the annual river cleanup her department organized. From a water quality or ecological standpoint, removing shopping carts, car tires, and other macro trash from the river really wasn't that important, she said. The real threat to the river was industrial and agricultural runoff.
"But!" she said:
People who see a clean, trash-free river are more likely support laws to curb more harmful "systemic" forms of pollution. People who participate in river cleanups take pride in their work--their river!--and become evangelists for protecting it.
Immediate action leads to systemic awareness, which leads to systemic change.
Why waste the rain?
I'm obsessed with gardening systems that utilize rainwater without the use of barrels or cisterns. My ultimate fav is using bioswales to catch and filter stormwater on the street.
Fun addition: Dams that utilize trees to catch dirt/ stop erosion, and prevent disaster that can come from broken dams.
Also:
SUSTAINABLE URBAN DRAINAGE! SUDS!
We need more of them, in the right places!
Also, using these to reduce stormwater loads in storm events, particularly in places with combined stormwater and sewage systems, could/would be helpful at reducing river discharges of raw sewage. (If climate change is factored in at system level cos more rain in less time needs to be accouted for at rhe large scale designs...)
Plus using constructed wetlands to retain these discharges and treat them before rivers too!
