I think Khemjira is the first BL I've watched that wholeheartedly passes the Beckdel test, and god DAMN is it refreshing
Okay, I need my BL bitches to pull up because I've realized I might have a different opinion about what qualifies as a black flag
Imo, a character is a black flag if they do black flag shit to ANYONE, not just their love interest. Like, if your bitch is out here murdering and raping people with no desire to change, but they don't do it to you because you're their special little boy, that's still a black flag for me
This includes if the character feels remorse but ONLY for their love interest / has a "redemption arc" that only applies to the love interest
Don't get me wrong, I love a psycho as much as the next guy, but I'm curious if this is how other people feel about this or if I'm alone lmao
CC, in love, is the perfect mix of paranoid and mentally lazy.
He ALWAYS knows something is up, but he never has the strength to investigate. And it's funny because he's always right, but verifying his fears is just too much of a hassle so he crosses his legs and waits for people to come clean.
He knew WSW was sus from day 1. Knew he was playing him, somehow. Didn't bother to find out more about this guy that he wants to fuck so desperately.
GCY knew about YY in 2 seconds. WS showed up in ep15 and found out about YY BEFORE CC.
He suspected the threat on LJ's life had something to do with WSW but if those men hadn't attacked LJ and WSW hadn't gone to save LJ, CC would never have brought it up.
He knows WSW is a liar and a schemer and yet, he's just walking headfirst into the manipulation because he doesn't have the energy to care. This man turned off his brain for romance. If anything, I'm sure he's annoyed whenever it starts to say, "watch out. error. that piece of information doesn't add up."
My guy just wants to fuck and be domestic, after years of being a toxic piece of shit.
Side note: he's only ever vigilant when he senses competition. WZ and JZS are evidence of this.
"Chi Cheng isn't a black flag--"
Babes. I love Chi Cheng dearly, but he arranged for a man who betrayed him to be gang raped in the FIRST EPISODE, and his only commentary was DON'T PLAY WITH HIM TO DEATH???
He has canonically forced himself on an unknown (but presumably high) number of men and almost does it to Wu Suowei too but is bewitched by bambi eyes before he goes through with it (looking at you, convo with Gang Zi where Chi Cheng is like "am I scary 𼺠my boytoy won't let me touch him" and Gang Zi goes "just force it??")
He would not know "safe, sane, and consensual" if it bit him in the ass

Daily reminder that fandoms ship dynamics, not storylines
Not sure who I first heard put it that way, but it's an excellent way of explaining why fandoms ship characters that "don't make sense" to a normal audience or are "problematic."
A ship does not represent a desire for what should happen in the actual source material. It represents a dynamic between two characters that a fan finds compelling. This is how we get so much content for ships like Harry/Snape.
People often respond to these types of ships with shock and disgust because they are interpreting it as someone saying "I wish Harry and Snape got together in the source material."
Often, this couldn't be further from the truth. Shippers want to take dynamics and characters out of context and into fandom spaces to explore ideas and themes that can't be explored in-universe.
I'm not a Harry/Snape shipper, but when I saw the ship I wasn't surprised because Harry and Snape's personalities and dynamics represent common themes in fandom shipping (rivalry, complex history, enemies to lovers, redemption, guilt, etc.)
This is also why so many "problematic" fandom spaces have the strictest social rules regarding filtering. They're not interested in their out-of-context exploration to get tangled up with the in-context canon, especially if that exploration could be harmful to sensitive groups.
In my real life experience, the people I have met that are most dedicated to making fandom spaces safe to engage with are the people creating problematic content. When you're dealing with sensitive material, it forces you to engineer ways to keep your community safe, and the people who engineered those structures are people who create problematic content.
People who only write what is "acceptable" don't create sites like archiveofourown.

Haunting actually comes naturally to ghosts and the boys have to exert themselves to not do it, because they donât want to frighten anybody and it might get in the way of cases.
Charles who causes cold spots; Charles who can make a whole room cold enough for the living to see their breath in the middle of summer, if heâs upset enough. Charles who occasionally leaves footprints of muddy water where he walks. Charles who leaves droplets of water running down mirrors after he uses them.
Edwin who has the smell of burning sulfur clinging to him; Edwin who always has the living checking around for a fire. Edwin, whose calculating gaze can make even non-sighted living shiver like theyâre being watched. Edwin, who might seem calm, but the electricity surging and fuses blowing gives him away.
Ghosts boys that actually do some haunting.
I need everyone to consciously process that Dou Dou is calling Wu Suowei č 媽 (jiu ma) which isn't 'aunt/aunty' in the generic way that éżĺ§¨ (a-yi) is, but is the specific term used to address your mother's brother's wife.
So when his sister gives Chi Cheng a look after asking 'č 媽?' and he nods, that's him confirming to her what his intensions are to Wu Suowei - this is the person Chi Cheng intends to marry. This is Chi Cheng making it absolutely clear that Wu Suowei is not another one of his flings or short-term partners. This is serious.
And I adore the way Wu Suowei checks that Chi Cheng is okay with this before he wholeheartedly embraces it. He specifically refers to himself as č 媽 when he says "your uncle (č č ) and I (č 媽) will visit you" which is his own overt way of confirming to Chi Cheng's sister that they're on the same page. Like gender norms be damned, Wu Suowei will stand by his man and make it clear that he's proud to be his partner.
God they make me feel insane. ;A; <3
(Also bless this kid for taking in the fond and affectionate look that Chi Cheng was giving to Wu Suowei and instantly deciding that the only logical explanation was that this had to be his jiu jiu's wife. xD)

Okay, can someone tell me WHY CHI CHENG IS TALKING SHIT AFTER MAMA'S FUNERAL LIKE DONT PISS ME OFF I KNOW YOU LOVED HER AND I KNOW YOU LOVE SUOWEI LITERALLY MAKE IT MAKE SENSE
yeah yeah Asagiri said Chuuya probably thought Dazai was dead after he left the PM and before they learned he was working at the ADA, but I'm more interested in Asagiri confirming that Dazai didn't know Chuuya was faking being a vampire in Meursault, it wasn't planned, he just never believed Chuuya could have been defeated and turned into one. And then he was right.
transcript of the question and answer under the cut
EXACTLY!! Like, can we focus on how absolutely crazy that stunt was?? We always talk about plans, counter plans and what not, but that wasn't a plan AT ALL. If you think about it, dazai couldn't know nikolai was gonna show up, couldn't know about his game, couldn't know about sigma still being alive since ango probably told him he fell from the sky casino, and only had some intuitions on fyodor's plans but never certainties. Dazai didn't know shit, he was just making strategies on the spot with the little elements he could get.
And then he pulls THIS face when he understands fyodor involved chuuya of all people
Look at him, he hated it. But he gave one glance at the scene and just said "yeah no, that ain't it, chuuya is too strong for this shit. He's definitely faking it" and just went with it???? Like bro???
When we talk about the absolute trust soukoku have for each other we always end up crying on DA, but THIS?? This definitely sits at the same table.
Also obsessed with this glimpse into just how intelligent and capable Chuuya is. He often gets overshadowed by the intelligence of other characters, Dazai especially, but this bitch is fucking SMART. He knew this was a long game, he knew he couldn't punch his way out of it, he knew if they wanted any chance of winning this he needed to get to Dazai, and he MADE IT HAPPEN. Fuck I love him so much
anyway the thing about fanfic is that it's not essentially bad or good; it's essentially amateur. some people are absolutely out there writing award-worthy prose (some fic writers ARE award-winning writers IRL!), but that's not the point. the point is that we're all telling campfire stories. it's a community, and it's a way to spend some more time in the worlds and stories that we love.
Just started watching Revenged Love, about to go to the ER for whiplash
Intro Song:
smiling at each other, blowing bubbles, holding hands maybe
Any Given Moment of the Actual Show:
Chi Cheng grabs Wu Suowei's throat in an impressively aggressive way and proceeds to throw him across the room, Wu Suowei manages to both moan and squeak simultaneously
Just wait because the bubbles really do happen !!! Also thereâs the most random water fight - itâs just the best most bonkers series!!!
I am trusting you bestie o7

So. Queerness and WWI (Aka: Changing Perceptions of Queerness, the Lost Generation, and Edwin Payne as an Extension of his Era)
okay. so like. precursor to the "Queerness and WWI" rant: what we as a public think queerness was like pre-1970s is a complicated topic not only because of rapid shifts happening after wwi (both as a result of the war but also because of the sexual revolution of the 1920s, which gave more awareness/rights to women/their sexuality but also fundamentally destroyed the ability for boston marriages- aka, lesbian relationships that to the outside functioned as just "women being roommates" and their like to exist as they did) but because a lot of history/records/research on the queer community was fundamentally wiped out in europe in the 1940s.
So there are several topics that you can discuss when it comes to different aspects of queerness at the turn of the 20th century, and a lot of it has to be unpacked on a number of different levels, especially our tendency as a modern audience to assume that how we perceive homophobia now was how we perceived it then.
Which is just...fundamentally not how it works.
I am not saying that there were not transphobia and homophobia back then, but that they presented themselves differently, and that homosexuality and transsexuality (as it was called at the time) were perceived differently than they are now.
For a long time, homosexuality was not seen as an identity, but as a behavior. Similarly, often times, transsexuality (as we are referring to it within this context because we are specifically referring to it within the context of the late 1800s-early 1900s) was actually seen as far more of a curiosity rather than a perversion, as we assume it must have been thought of at the time. History is not as linear as we think it is, and there are actually several newspaper articles from early 1900s into the 1950s and even 60s presenting sex change as a medical curiosity or even a medical fascination/innovation rather than an outright negative thing.
(This is not to say that transphobia did not exist during this time period, but that it existed within a different set of circumstances.)
A lot of how we perceive homophobia and transphobia within the modern day in America and Britain is directly related to the Reagan revolution of the 1980s, the AIDS crisis, and the rise of the alt-right and its connection with religion specifically in the United States but also how that spread in the '80s due to the Reagan/Thatcher Alliance.
(However, we are specifically talking about the Edwardian period, so I will stop talking about the modern day no matter how much I want to rant about Reagan. That's for another time. And perhaps a discussion about the historical context of Charles' queerness.)
But getting back to the Edwardian era- you can't talk about the early 1900s and queer history or any sort of History without talking about World War I. There's a very strong argument to be made that the 1900s fundamentally don't really begin in the way in which we currently perceive them until 1914. That there was a very long 19th century and a shorter 20th century in terms of political movements, socio-cultural movements, and the like.
And that definitely includes queerness.
Because basically, everything in the world radically changes with World War I- especially in the western world, but with rippling effects elsewhere as well.
It is the war that began on horseback and ends on tanks. It is the war that sees multiple political revolutions around the world, the overthrowing of the Russian/ottoman/german/austro-hungarian empires, and the overthrowing of what a lot of people thought of as the age of honor and chivalry and like a lot of things that are only tenuously hanging on by the end of the 1800s. World War I happens and the world fundamentally ends and begins again, with The Lost Generation and the Roaring Twenties.
BUT AS FOR THE QUEER CONTEXT OF WWI (which, if you're still here, sorry about it taking so long):
âWe want more complex, morally Grey male charactersâ
Yaâll couldnât even handle Jinu
Iâm going to preface this by saying that yes, there are things that this man does in this movie that are objectively horrible
1. He got hundreds of people killed
2. He betrayed rumi during the idol awards
However, THAT. IS.THE. FLIPPING. POINT!!!
This man has spent 400 years in the demon realm. 400 years of a manipulative, and seductive fire telling him that he doesnât deserve any happiness, any comfort, any joy or love because of what he did to his family.
I think that the best way to describe his morality is through his verse in Free (which is the best song in the movie imo) :
âOh time goes by
And I lose perspective
Hope only hurts,
So I just forget it
But your breaking through all the dark in me
When I thought that nobody could
And your waking up all these parts in me
That I thought were buried for good.
Between imposter and this monster
Iâve been lost inside my head
Ainât no choice when all these voices keep me
Pointing towards no end
Itâs just easy when Iâm with you
No one sees me the way you do
I donât trust it but I want toâ
He wants to trust Rumi, he wants to believe her and be with her, but he canât because heâs been manipulated so much. He does love Rumi, I truly believe he does, however you canât just undo 400 years of manipulation in a couple days, and she understands that. Thats why she forgives him so easily after he humiliates her at the idol awards.
The thing that annoys me so much in the fandom is when people say that âjinu is just evilâ or that âyou only like him cause he is attractiveâ
1. Please for the sake of my sanity do not simplify characters by saying that they are evil or good. THEY ARE PEOPLE. God forbid someone makes a mistake or is not a perfect angel. He made mistakes. He did bad things. But, as Rumi told him, that is not all he is. The fact that he made those mistakes makes him human and makes him a person
2. Although yes he is attractive, that is NOT the reason that I enjoy his character so much. I love him because he makes mistakes. I love him because I can relate to his trauma. I love him because although he is the antagonist, he can be silly, dorky, and cute. I love him because he is such a big and important part of Rumiâs development throughout the movie. Lastly, I love him because he is so complicated and morally grey that there are so many parts of his character to decipher.
Sorry this is so long, Iâve just seen so much discourse and misunderstandings about Jinu and just wanted to share my thoughts.
