I’ve just been given permission to share this previously top secret project! #projectegress is a sort of collaborative, commemorative, patchwork quilt, exquisite corpse, life-size, semi-functional interpretation of the Apollo 11 modules hatch door.... It’s the 50th anniversary of the moon landing by the way! #apollo50 So, basically the original hatch was reverse engineered into parts schematics which were handed out to a bunch of artist/maker/builder/engineer types and we all got to make a little part of it. Now @therealadamsavage and @testedcom are going to assemble the whole mess at the @airandspacemuseum (Smithsonian) for display, along with the original (actual hatch)..... Did anybody read this far? It’s a difficult thing to sum up, but it’s a really cool project, and I’m honored to be among the ranks of the fabulous talent involved. I talk a lot about how drawing isn’t part of my sculpture process. I’m actually trying to change this. When relying on found objects for inspiration, traditional drawing can be frustrating. I find that if I consider arranging parts on the floor as “sketching”, then I’m able to move the composition over to 2d drawing later for clearer visualization. Here’s an anglerfish/airship/submarine concept I’m currently playing with. It would be pretty big. Here’s a closer look at the character from my previous post. The body and head are a heavily modified sewing machine lamp. Arms and legs are made from aircraft cable linkages. Hands were made from fondue forks. The ball joints use drive chain links. I had to machine the feet from scratch and set magnets into them to make posing easier. There is a 9v battery just barely squeezed into his body, with a dimmer on his back. The little brass studs on his butt allow me to connect a power supply to save battery life when it’s possible to conceal the wires...... “Loose Screws 2018” I want to find as many ways to breathe life into found objects as I can. Usually this means kinetic sculpture, but I’ve always loved stop motion animation too (though I have almost no experience). I love making the little characters and seeing them come to life. This figure evolved from a sewing machine lamp and bits of hardware. The sound for this clip was also cobbled together from junk around the studio. Making little robot feet. This was a rare moment when I had to come up with something completely from scratch. I needed a hexagonal shape to roughly match other body elements. It also needed a 5/16” ball joint ankle, and magnets for stability.
