I saw this meme online and then saw it debunked by snopes.com and I experienced a brief rage blackout. What REALLY frosts my cookies about this picture is that not only is it birther bullshit, it’s erasure.

Are people so wholly xenophobic and bigoted that they forget history and origins? The answer to both of these questions is “yes.” People are so ready to believe racist bullshit that they forget they have interwebs and smart phones which may help prevent creating and posting garbage like this.

I am a Social worker in a relatively wealthy country the UK. I notice some of you are calling yourselves Social Workers in some of the poorest Nations on Earth. How do you cope with your work without resources or legislation to back you up. I work in a court and protection team in Engalnd, we spend a fortune on some of our cases, I cannot imagine how you function. Please discuss.”

“Social Work is a very broad concept.
Just because the "West" has more monetary resources, does not mean that the West is more equipped to deal with human/social issues. I've worked in very rural parts of South Africa, parts in which I myself (as a South African) haven't ever seen before. I found that the people in the most rural parts are more self-efficient than most city/urban dweller(s).
There is a huge misconception about self-efficiency and what we deem as 'being efficient' in a capitalist driven society. Social work is not limited to court cases, nor is it limited to development. Social Work and social workers are essential contributors to the functioning of society regardless of where we may be geographically positioned in the world. [ I hope the person who posed this question understands how important 'wording' is].
The practice of social work functions in every part of human interaction; there is no reason to have a separatist attitude about 'how we manage to function', we just simply do.
We base our practice on the concept that 'every human being is capable' and we use what we can; enforce legislature and inform policy through the idea that we need to create environments which enable human beings to be self-efficient. Our practice here in South Africa is very broad, we manage to contribute very holistically. We are not limited only to micro practice; but we are required to contribute on all three levels of functioning simultaneously (micro, messo and macro).
We are forced to be creative. Forced to challenge social dynamics and tradition, forced to confront change! We are more than "enough" to contribute to the profession. No-one should ever undermine us. The fact that we manage to achieve so much, without all of the money, should be celebrated and not dismissed or belittled. “

Crossing the Trajectory: Social Work is more than just a noble profession.
Today I conducted a workshop on the National Curriculum Framework which has been rolled out in South Africa officially since 2014 (as far as I know). The workshop was successful. And the feedback was generally positive. Although I am not an 'expert in the field or an expert on the National Curriculum Framework ', I felt that I was capacitated enough to share a bit of aquired knowledge with my assigned team. With all of this in mind, I especially took note of my ability to create. Despite my aquired knowledge, there was an underlying feeling of joy I felt whilst creating and facilitating the workshop. The National Curriculum Framework (Ncf) is a great tool for the Early Childhood Development sector in South Africa. Although I do not completely agree with some of the rigid expectations outlined, I still see the value and importance of having the framework being implemented. My experience as a Social Worker who attended this very workshop in late February 2015; conducted by The Education Department and ECDi, was that we still have some way to go before the role of a Social Worker within the Early Childhood Development sector is fully understood and applied. And I will work myself to the bone, to prove our importance in this sector. Early Childhood Development is a cornerstone in providing and preparing the road to development and self efficiency for any child. For a better world. We need to enable our youngest citizens without fear for our world. And Social Workers are at the forefront of making this a reality. This is my daily struggle: Trying to cross over the trajectory of attitudinal and institutional barriers. Social Work is more than just a noble profession. It should be an active one.
