It's still #fuckInstagram for the ongoing glitches with my story highlights, but recently back from a much needed mental health break underwater, I'm posting this image in the hopes it will lure you my website. This image and 14 other limited edition prints are available for purchase in the gallery. The website is FernandaMeier.com, and the link is in my bio. This has been a summer of transition; I'm still unpacking boxes from my move to New Orleans while I simultaneously pack my suitcase for long-overdue trips near and far. I hope I get to hug some of you, soon; it has been far too long and I am fully touch-deprived and sad about it. Work has been... eye opening, to say the least. I'm back to my happy place of contract work and freelancing, so if you know anyone in need of a remote Digital or Social Media Strategist, send them my way, por favor. You can also find a resume on my website if you're feeling extra benevolent and want to refer me directly to your network. I hope you are all doing well, washing your hands, wearing a mask, and telling your loved ones how much they mean to you. Life is entirely too short and time waits for no one. Nani loves you. “I felt the full breadth and depth of the ocean around the sphere of the Earth, back billions of years to the beginning of life, across all the passing lives and deaths, the endless waves of swimming joy and quiet losses of exquisite creatures with fins and fronds, tentacles and wings, colourful and transparent, tiny and huge, coming and going. There is nothing the ocean has not seen.” – Sally Andrew New prints in the gallery at FernandaMeier.com (at Santo Domingo, República Dominicana) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChanRwDAmlu/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Last call for the summer selections in The Shape Of Wind. Massive thank you to those who have purchased prints already. 🖤 FernandaMeier.com (at Gentilly, New Orleans) https://www.instagram.com/p/CgMn8BtgjKo/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Chiang Rai, Thailand - Blue Temple 2018. Overcast days are my favorite for outdoor images because colors deepen and contrast pops. Shot with a @sony Alpha 6ooo, this image perfectly captures the grandiosity of statues while observing with deep reverence all I was privileged witness that day. Despite being a mere traveler on a tour, I felt compelled to worship at the feet of this incredibly hand-detailed shrine. Limited run print for sale at FernandaMeier.com. #Wampum is a traditional shell bead of the Eastern Woodlands tribes of Native Americans. It includes white shell beads hand fashioned from the North Atlantic channeled whelk shell and white and purple beads made from the quahog or Western North Atlantic hard-shelled clam. Before European contact, strings of wampum were used for storytelling, ceremonial gifts, and recording important treaties and historical events, such as the Two Row Wampum Treaty and the Hiawatha Belt. Wampum was also used by the northeastern Indigenous tribes as a means of exchange, strung together in lengths for convenience. The first colonizers understood it as a currency and adopted it as such in trading with them. Eventually, colonizers applied their technologies to more efficiently produce wampum, which caused inflation and ultimately its obsolescence as currency. The Wampanoag Nation once included all of SE Massachusetts and Eastern Rhode Island, encompassing over 67 distinct tribal communities. The Wampanoag people have undergone a very difficult history after being ravaged by pilgrims in the early 1600s. “With European settlers came much adversity for our tribe - disease that virtually wiped out whole villages, systems of government that bore little resemblance to our tribal practices and values, missionaries intent on converting us to Christianity, and private models of land use and ownership that conflicted with our tribe's own communal practices and values. The vast majority of these tribal communities were killed in battles initiated by colonists to secure land. Today, only six visible tribal communities remain. Our tribe continues to be self-governing and is taking great strides toward economic self-sufficiency. Even the Wampanoag language is being taught to tribal members. Through it all we have not forgotten who we are.” 🖤 Sources: https://wampanoagtribe-nsn.gov/wampanoag-history https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wampum (at Aquinnah, Massachusetts) https://www.instagram.com/p/CewgPAqv1JV/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
I spent an overcast, misty day on the cliffs of Aquinnah this past weekend, and two things became very clear to me: sea breeze is the only air I want to breathe, and Mother Nature is the greatest artist. Tucked on the westernmost post of Martha’s Vineyard, Aquinnah is a Native town reclaimed after hundreds of years of colonization. Its history is rich & magical, and for the few hours I traipsed around the dunes and combed the cold beach sand and surf for wampum shells, I couldn’t help but feel as though there was a spiritual warm blanket around me. 10,000 steps wasn’t enough- I will absolutely return to learn more. Read more about the Wampanoag people below, in their own words: The last great North American glacier began its retreat some 10,000 years ago, leaving behind the accumulation of boulders, sand, and clay that is now known as Martha's Vineyard. There, it is said, a benevolent being named Moshup roamed the land. One day, Moshup was making his way across the mainland to the headlands of the Aquinnah Cliffs. Weary from his journey, Moshup dragged his foot heavily, leaving a deep track in the mud. At first, only a silver thread of water trickled in the track. But gradually, the ocean's force of wind and tides broadened and deepened the opening, creating an island named Noepe. The Wampanoag were the first people of Noepe. The ancestors of Wampanoag people have lived for at least 10,000 years at Aquinnah (Gay Head) and throughout the island of Noepe (Martha's Vineyard), pursuing a traditional economy based on fishing and agriculture. The Aquinnah Wampanoag share the belief that the giant Moshup created Noepe and the neighboring islands, taught our people how to fish and to catch whales, and still presides over our destinies. Our beliefs and a hundred million years of history are imprinted in the colorful clay cliffs of #Aquinnah. Never forget: #Pride started as a riot, led by Black and Latinx trans femmes. History was made in #TheCityOfFirsts this weekend at @spfldmacityhall by @springfieldprideparadeorg. @just_taurean and his incredible team hosted their inaugural Pride Parade and hosted so many talented performers, my feet and cameras could barely keep up! I had to keep applying sunscreen every hour because I cried it off with tears of joy. Middle and high school children and their families kicked off the parade with Grand Marshal @axiomblue as (Kitty) Cat in the Hat, in homage to Springfield being the home of @drseuss, and it just got better from there. WHEW, it was so beautiful to see so many smiling, happy faces from all backgrounds, dancing, celebrating, and enjoying life in a safe, welcoming environment. Taurean, you DID THAT. Infinite CONGRATULATIONS 🎉 to you for envisioning and manifesting the space you deserve. See my story highlights and @springfieldprideparadeorg’s profile for more of the festivities, and always remember, #LoveIsLove, and we all deserve to be free. Thank you for recharging my heart battery, babies. (at Springfield, Massachusetts) https://www.instagram.com/p/CejDLS4LzwP/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
