The  last  remnants  of  his  magic  —  his  resonance  —  vibrated  faintly  in  the  air  around  him.  Whatever  world  he  had  ended  up  in,  he  had  strayed  so  far  from  the  source  of  his  powers  that  gathering  enough  energy  for  another  jump  between  worlds  required  an  immense  effort  of  strength  and  concentration.  From  that  strain  and  the  exhaustion  of  the  past  few  days  came  the  carelessness  that  had  so  far  failed  to  warn  him  of  yet  another  pursuer.  The  look  on  the  young  man’s  face  mirrored  what  must  have  been  written  all  over  Kaine's  own.  Whoever  or  whatever  he  had  seen  had  apparently  inspired  enough  fear  to  make  him  run  at  the  very  limits  of  his  physical  ability.  Fuck.  As  a  sign  of  good  faith  in  the  context  of  his  change  of  heart,  he  had  actually  intended  to  avoid  collateral  damage  in  this  world.

Before  he  could  form  another  clear  thought,  he  felt  the  numbing  resonance  of  his  home  world  wash  over  him  like  a  thick  film  of  oil,  dulling  every  sense,  slowing  the  world  and  making  any  kind  of  action  difficult.  Unsure  whether  he  alone  could  feel  the  oppressive  foreign  influence,  he  turned  to  the  stranger,  who  was  staring  at  him  as  if  turned  to  stone.  “They’re  not  after  you,”  Kaine  forced  out  through  clenched  teeth  and  with  considerable  effort.  Just  a  little  longer,  until  he  had  gathered  enough  energy  to  disappear  from  here.  Seconds  maybe.  “Are  people  here  really  that  slow?  That  means  you’re  supposed  to  get  out  of  here!”

But  the  lead  he  had  built  up  over  his  pursuers  was  already  nothing  more  than  a  drop  in  the  ocean.  Before  the  attackers  even  entered  Kaine’s  field  of  vision,  they  announced  themselves  in  the  form  of  obsidian  daggers  flying  toward  the  two  men.  The  lich  —  and  thus  the  source  of  the  attack,  one  of  the  Undying  —  and  his  two  undead  followers  were  just  visible  enough  in  the  darkness  that  an  untrained  eye  would  have  struggled  to  tell  the  difference  between  ordinary  humans  and  an  alchemist  accompanied  by  two  walking  corpses.  At  the  cost  of  a  portion  of  the  energy  he  would  have  needed  to  flee  this  version  of  the  world,  he  just  barely  managed  to  induce  a  kind  of  stasis,  slowing  the  projectiles.  A  gap  —  enough  to  transport  himself  and  the,  in  his  opinion  useless  though  innocent,  bystander  through  the  tear  in  space  and  time  he  had  created.  Anywhere,  since  he  had  neither  a  second  more  nor  a  spark  of  resonance  left  to  define  an  exact  destination  within  this  world.  Unfortunately,  in  the  moment  his  senses  reached  for  the  portal,  he  was  aware  of  only  two  things:  his  energy  had  not  been  sufficient  to  carry  both  himself  and  the  stranger  into  another  world  —  his  pursuers  might  still  be  on  his  heels  —  and  the  daggers  he  had  tried  to  keep  at  bay  had  struck  him.  Unconsciousness  welcomed  him  like  an  old  friend.

“You  didn’t  have  to  be  so  reckless  just  to  prove  a  fucking  point.”  The  voice  tore  him  out  of  the  only  moment  of  peace  he  had  had  in  weeks.  The  events  of  the  last  moments  before  he  had  lost  consciousness  returned  to  him  in  fragments,  like  flashes  of  lightning  behind  his  eyes.  He  could  identify  the  voice  only  by  process  of  elimination  and  had  he  not  been  so  occupied  with  assessing  the  state  of  his  own  body,  he  would  have  had  to  concentrate  very  hard  not  to  stab  the  person  opposite  him  on  principle  with  one  of  the  daggers  lodged  between  his  ribs.
