But let’s analyse it just a bit more.

First of all, I just have to say that chapter 314 was beautiful. As many have said, it’s pure poetry. Every panel was beautifully written and drawn. The pacing was perfectly executed. The last panels with the crow breaking free and right after that seeing Hinata jump? Made me emotional. The jump was epic, but what about Kageyama? Chapter 314 is titled the Strongest Ally 2 for a reason. This chapter is a further proof that Kageyama has changed, he’s been growing as a setter. In this moment where his team is facing difficulties, Kageyama chooses to drive his spikers to their limits while still being completely aware of their conditions. Here, we don’t have middle school King Kageyama tossing to his teammates of Kitagawa with fast tosses and just demanding them to somewhat catch it, no. This is setter Kageyama knowing that his teammates will make it, this is Kageyama completely putting his trust on his teammates. I’m using teammates, but the title of the chapter is the Strongest Ally 2. It’s THE teammate. Kageyama is putting his full trust on Hinata. He’s set to Hinata at a third tempo. He and Hinata have started as an invincible pair with their quick. With a minus tempo. Because that was what Hinata had at the beginning: agility. Kageyama used him because Hinata was fast and he could jump, because Hinata could be in that spot where the opponents’ block wasn’t. First tempo’s proof that Hinata’s growing as a spiker. But a third tempo is…slow. Hinata himself whose abilities relied on him being fast has slowed down to pay attention to his surroundings. Slowing down has been a sign of growth for Hinata. And here we have Kageyama setting to Hinata in a third tempo - to that one spiker who can keep up with his mad tosses. This is Kageyama setting in a third tempo, giving Hinata a choice, trusting that Hinata will be able to jump high and break through a 3 people block. We had Hinata encouraging Kageyama to do his incredibly accurate toss to him and trusting that they’ll make it in the Strongest Ally and now we have Kageyama encouraging Hinata to do a high jump and trusting that he’ll make it. This chapter is not only proof of both Kageyama and Hinata’s growths as individual players, but also proof of how far they’ve come as teammates who now completely trust each other.
