Natalie Rose Lane was a blessed child â really. In her mind, anyway, she lived in a castle. Her father, the King, was powerful but loving. Her mother, the Queen, was fair and gentle. She played in the forest, singing for the animals, and neâer was there danger or trial to be found. Of course, that isnât reality, even if she prefers to remember it that way. In reality, their home was fine, but it wasnât a castle. Her parents, however solid and wonderful, werenât royalty. And, in the end, there was no forest and no singing. Danger came in the form of an overnight carbon monoxide leak that killed her whole family, including her twin baby sisters, when Natalie was just four years old. No one could explain why she was the one that lived. Her grandparents took her in, of course, but by the time she was twelve, Natalie was in the foster care system, having lost them, too.
If anything could be considered lucky, it would be that she happened into the home of John and Melissa Wagner for her first foster home. It was an immediate fit; she idolized Melissa and wanted to marry someone like John. She crafted stories where every child they took in was a puzzle piece in the mosaic they were building and she loved the idea of them building a huge family around her, no matter how they actually felt about it. It was probably a good thing that seemed to be their plan, and before her adoption was finalized, her parents had already taken in two more children. It was the easiest for her to embrace Liam, because he wasnât a little sister. He was a blank template, not reminding her in any way of what sheâd already lost, and as she figured out the ropes in the Wagner household, she tried to share her knowledge with him. She did the same with most of the kids the Wagners took in over the years, right up until she graduated from high school and went to college, destined to study social work with stars in her eyes about the kids she would be able to help, maybe in a different way than her parents had but still. It was going to be perfect.
She was absolutely not prepared for Finn Slater to make his way into her world, any more than she was prepared to absolutely hate her entry level sociology and psychology classes. Analyzing people wasnât nearly as fun as connecting with them. Connecting with them wasnât nearly as fun when they somehow got under her skin the way he did. Really, she came to realize it was sexual tension. In spite of how different they were on paper in every conceivable way, she fell hard and fast for an ice hockey player whose love language was mostly wrapped up in sports-related competition. Life wasnât a forest, a song, a fairytale - life for him was a flat surface, solid ice, and high speed collision. Somewhere in the middle, they blended together and, even though she was just twenty-one, and he was just twenty-three, they got married in celebration when he got drafted into the NHL. Even if he was starting off in the minor league, she dropped out of college just two semesters shy of a communications degree.
Three months later, her parents were killed in a car accident. Out of all her found siblings, Liam seemed to have the hardest time adjusting. Heâd been in the car with them, after all. While Natalie was rocked in a much different way than she had been by the deaths of her parents or grandparents, the greatest way to recover that she could imagine was helping him. She offered to let him live with her and Finn, though Finn was traveling quite a bit, because she just knew she could love him enough to make it okay.
That wasnât exactly how it went. She was more devastated by her parentsâ death than she thought. Clearly, so was Liam. It had obviously shredded their entire family. Her marriage, though idyllic in some ways, wasnât ideal. Money was tight, stress was plentiful, and, in the end, there was no real balance to be found. After a wealth of hard choices were made, Natalie asked Liam to move out and implored him to get his life together a little, and she tried to get her own life together with a string of whatever jobs she could get without her degree. Eventually, she went back to school and finished her degree because it was the only thing she could control and the only way she could think of to help herself even a little bit. It was definitely not a step in the typical princess journey, but she took it anyway.
Everything had mostly started coming together for her. Finn had been called up and then traded within the NHL. They were thriving in Denver, her working in event advertising and promotion for the hockey team and Finn playing. Even though they were still young, they started talking about expanding their family and making plans she was sure would somehow honor both her birth parents and her adoptive parents. She desperately wanted it to bring her siblings back together. But before they got that far, Finn died suddenly and unexpectedly at home. He was only thirty years old. They had only been married for seven years, and to say it rocked Natalie would be an understatement. Nothing had ever prepared her to be a twenty-eight year old âwidowâ with a fractured adoptive family and a string of dead relatives longer than her list of good friends.
Recovery was a hard and uneven process. She found it mostly impossible to rally this time, this particular life change being almost more than she could handle. At first, she was isolated, feeling completely separate from anyone around her. Her job was really all she had left, and even that was a constant reminder of Finn because she was working for his former NHL team. She quit, and couldnât support herself. She found another job planning medical conventions, which werenât extremely different from sports events in the fundamentals. It took her to Chicago for a bit, but she lived near where Finn had grown up and that ended up being too hard. They had been married long enough sheâd been there, met people from his neighborhood, ran into them however infrequently. Her next change was a move back home to Seattle, even if that meant sheâd have to face the tatters and rags of what had once been a happy family.
