I feel absolutely terrible after 4 episodes. Nial definitely has a lifetime of PTSD, and that explains a lot. Living in constant stress with a brother who controls your life, and not getting support from a mother who seems to encourage it with her silence. Not to mention the incident with Alby. Even Joanna ends up siding with Ruben, which is wrong. He should have received therapy, but instead, he shut himself off and drove himself to exhaustion.

It sounds strange, but Ruben is also a father figure to Nial. His father died at an early age, and there are things that can't be discussed with his mother (especially with someone like her). In episode 3, I felt so sorry for Ruben, and I don't think it's the only time I felt this way throughout the series. It's difficult to explain, but I think it's hard for Neil to let go of the idea that Ruben can live without him. And he can live happily, okay? In the preview, we see that Ruben has a family with Mona, and they even have a child. It's hard not to feel hurt when someone has traumatized you. There will always be an emptiness in Niall, a desire for these events to be rectified and for people to repent. But even then, it won't be enough.
That's probably how trauma works, when you desperately want to get back the lost part of yourself before everything changed.
