Asa's Big Break
Heavy spoilers for Daemons of the Shadow Realm/Yomi no Tsugai, up to most recent chapter at time of writing, Chapter 51. We just got a few very interesting tidbits of information, and I want to discuss them in the context of my previous writing about the themes of the series.
(also, the anime of this series starts next week, on the 4th. I already saw the first episode, and it's really great. If you haven't been reading the series, you should watch it! And not read this post because it's full of spoilers)
Yomi no Tsugai (or Daemons of the Shadow Realm, as we anglophones are doomed to officially call it) has just been announced for a TV anime adaptation. This fact is very exciting to its large Japanese fanbase and all 12 people who read it overseas. Despite a pedigree that really should carry some weight over here (English-speakers enjoyed Fullmetal Alchemist as much as everyone else did) it seems like it's not really finding an audience in the English-speaking fan scene, and I have been looking. Most notably, there's been a real dearth of meta writing. It's still relatively early days for the series, admittedly - 43 chapters in, and narratively around what I'd call the start of the second act - but that's still quite a lot of manga already. I think it's enough to at least start talking about its themes.
Now, I know that by talking about theme so early, I risk being completely wrong. Everything I'm about to say might stop mattering with the very next chapter. Or perhaps I'm right about the themes, but they won't be executed well. I kind of doubt both, though. The themes of Hiromu Arakawa's most similar work, Fullmetal Alchemist, were clearly evident from the get-go and paid off very carefully. I'd hand that woman a blank cheque any day of the week. And if I'm wrong, well, I at least hope I will have inspired more people to be interested in this series. It's my favourite new thing in a long while.
So, what is Yomi no Tsugai about?

Hi, I'm a bit curious, how long have you been a fan of Kamen Rider?
HELLO. not for very long at all, ngl 🤔 the first show i watched as a serious "i want to get into kr" thing was revice in Dec 2024, but afterwards i didnt touch it until like, june last year. technically not even kamen rider, as i got back into tokusatsu through king ohger, and ever since ive been binging shows :))
but my first ever interaction with kamen rider was 🤔🤔 ooo in 2017 lol. so depending on how u wanna count it, its either 9 years, almost 2 years, or almost a year
He’s just a little scrappy guy!

is this anything
the most tragic character archetype you can be is like. someone whos way too trusting
sometimes i find myself comparing takatora to racles (older brothers who have to stain their hands to save their people from what is essentially an unbeatable eldritch horror), but theyre SO different as people. racles knew from the start his mission meant solitude, and no one would ever be on his side nor understand him. on the contrary, takatora seeked companions. he wanted people by his side while he worked at this impossible goal, and as a result he placed way too much trust in those he considered comrades. unearned trust
it saddens me everytime we pan to a scene and its takatora talking to ryoma and sid and minato and mitsuzane, going on and on about how he finally has hope for the future, or just about the plan in general. and you can tell hes so comfortable around them, because he trusts them to be people sharing his same goal, and that even though they may have occasional disagreement, or not always get along, theyre still a team. but then you look at those people and you see that they just. really want him dead
its something so unimaginably tragic imo. the fact that his relationship with ryoma had fallen apart so long ago without him ever knowing. the fact he still loves and tries to protect mitsuzane at every turn, the very same little brother who stood by as he got assassinated
idk how all this experience is gonna change him. is he gonna find it harder to place such trust in other people again. or is he still going to hold onto that hope-like trust. i think takatora isnt mentally well at all, that much we see from. well. look at him. id just like to see him be weak a little. let himself be affected more, instead of always acting like the dependable, composed kureshima that we see all the time. let takatora be hurt please ☹️

Okay but what if me noticing Baku is like Emu but more openly and visibly depressed was not just "oh hey retooling characters again" but also a hint that Baku is Patient Zero (meaning his age isn't exactly... correct) for this whole thing? What if the cram school special class wasn't just identifying/training new CODE agents but specifically trying to find Baku?
What if that's how Kensei realized something was fucking off about the whole thing and has spent time since then trying to kill Baku because Baku's needed for something big? And maybe not necessarily it was CODE looking for Baku back then, but someone else?
baseless theory, more like whimsical self indulgence, but what if the big twist is that baku DID create code. hear me out guys. time shenanigans where baku did create code in his dreams so he can have be an agent, but it impacted real life somehow and the actual organization was founded. thats why they were trying to find him: they know his power as a dreamer far exceeds that of an average person
i have zero hope of this being the case but its certainly cool to think about
