Gradac River and monument to otter, Serbia by czechnymph This river is rarely known but rated very highly among exponents of nature protection because of its special features and degree of preservation. The water is clear and clean, its quality of the first category and therefore safe to drink. Less than 1% of the world’s water is readily available for direct human use (World Wildlife Fund 2018). Average water temperature is 13 Celsius and the gorge is carved through karst terrain, with a depth of approximately 150-300m. Because of the specific flora and fauna in the region, the outstanding features of Gradac gorge are protected. There are more than 800 species of plants, about 100 species of birds. In and along the river live turtles, frogs, trout and chub; vipers, garter and water snakes; owls, hawks and eagles. A little deeper into the forest you can find deer, rabbits, foxes, boars, but also extremely rare orchids and a large number of mushrooms. The main inhabitant is the river otter, which is the symbol of Gradac. The otter has been recognised as a bioindicator and its absence or presence in its natural habitats indicates the quality. > >
