Chapter 2 - The Web of Lies
The eve of melancholy was the first to arrive at the cafĂŠ. It was stupid on so many different layers. First, why should Nicco return to this cafĂŠ? They were after all still strangers to each other, and he was on a business trip. Probably was he on a board meeting or something like that. Maybe he was already engaged and maybe had kids. (Y/N)âs pride couldnât handle it if she were to be a mistress. Or the second anything.
Secondly, even if he comes again and they both start to like each other more, it wouldnât work out for the two of them. He is in Tokyo for a couple of weeks and then returns to Italy, and she couldnât leave Tsubakiâs side, let alone Japan. He even doesnât know anything about her, only the lies she told him and her name. She would have to come clean about being an actress and that she lied to him. She also would have to explain to him that vampires existed, that she is an Eve of a Servamp that hates his siblings and wants to destroy society to bring back his old sensei/father/even (Y/N) doesnât know how to explain that relationship between those two non-humans. Not to mention she would need to tell him her past and how all of her documents are faked after she became an Eve. That her life was built on lies. She wasnât even honest to Tsubaki anymore, so how was she supposed to be honest to a guy that she even wasnât bound by magic?
Third, to even have to meet with Nicco today, she cancelled a shooting that was about to start, told Ume she needed more free time for herself, and even postponed a meeting with a good âfriendsâ. Said friends was the only one she told the real reason why she moved the hours, and they were supportive until she told them that she didnât know if Nicco would show up because they didnât exchange numbers or anything and would leave Japan soon again.
ÂťRather spending time with a guy you probably never see again, do something with your friends! You also just do work. When youâve finally found some sense and no longer use every second of the day to work, you should waste that valuable time of yours on some man! Go out with your coworkers and have a drink! Donât waste your life!ÂŤ Her old âfriendâ said to her through the phone.
(Y/N) could even hear his wife sighing.
ÂťI will, I promise!ÂŤ The actress lied again.
The Eve went to the counter and ordered the same items as yesterday. She paid, ignored the knowing smile of the owner, and took the same seat as the day before. She also took the mafia book out to continue where she left off. Right now, she is in the chapter where the witch tries to tell her lover the truth, but it was shut down by the ML. He already figured out the truth and accused her of manipulating him. But it was also highlighted that she still didnât know his real identity. Why would the ML be so offended by this lie? It was shown from the start that she lied to him to keep him safe and away from her dangerous family/world. He didnât even give her the time to explain herself. He just left her alone while leaving her in the dark.
This chapter really messed up with the mood. Her only hope was halfway through the book, and she swore if the ML didnât apologise from the bottom of his heart to the FL, she would hunt down the author.
ÂťWhat are you reading?ÂŤ
Shocked, did (Y/N) jump out of her skin? She turned her head to look into Niccoâs beautiful green eyes. His beautiful, innocent eyes that never saw any danger in his life. He was to be protected from the darkness in the world. How was he supposed to understand and live with the fear that vampires really existed? No, no, no. (Y/N) would keep him safe and sane. Tsubaki would not harm anyone that close to her, right? Yeah.
ÂťOhu hi Nicco!ÂŤ (Y/N) smiled at Eve of Gluttony.
Just by her smile alone, Niccolò blushed again. He liked how she always looked directly into his eyes as if he was the only one who mattered. He also adored the way she made him feel special and like a normal person. To her, he was a simple salesman who came here to do some business. Which was basically the truth if one ignored that he was the boss of his mafia family or that he was doing some illegal business or that he made a contract with the Servamp of Gluttony.
But that didnât matter. It was the first time since he was in Tokyo, no, since he became the head, that he ever felt like he was preferred and cared for. It was too early to call it love, but the Don was sure to call it mutual affection. At least he hoped it was mutual. It would be nice if they could become more someday.
ÂťIâm sorry if I startled you. You were just so immersed in your book, I was wondering what made you look so mad.ÂŤ Niccolò apologised sheepishly.
ÂťItâs fine, Nicco. I was reading The Bewitched Don. Itâs a love story between a witch and a mafia boss.ÂŤ
ÂťMafia boss?!ÂŤ
ÂťYeah, right now the male lead is accusing the female lead of manipulating him because he figured out she is a witch, which she planned to tell him on the same day. What makes the scene so much worse is that she still doesnât know that her love is part of the mafia and hid it from her for the same reasons as she did. But to be honest, I think both of them have a second secret that the reader still doesnât know.ÂŤ (Y/N) explained the story to Niccolò.
Do you read these kinds of books often? Niccolò asked, rather disturbed.
Was this a trick? Did (Y/N) know about his family? Was it her way of telling him she knows the truth and judges him? How was she supposed to know that?
ÂťNah, Iâm not the biggest fan of miscommunication. But my dad got it for me the last time he visited Italy. So I donât forget our roots. What he really means is that he gave up finding a better souvenir for me. Would you believe that? Iâm his kid, but he still doesnât know what I like.ÂŤ The woman laughed and sighed.
Niccolò could clearly see her disappointment in her eyes. She didnât look like someone who valued material possessions. Just as he wanted to lighten her mood, he was interrupted by the same woman he had started to develop some unknown feelings for.
ÂťSo my dear, how comes that such a busy man as yourself has the time of day to go visit some cafĂŠ in the middle of nowhere in Tokyo?ÂŤ
There she was again. The unshakable beauty that he couldnât seem to forget. How could he not continue to create an even bigger web of lies? If it meant that he was able to spend more time with her, was this a risk he was willing to take? Maybe one day he will tell her the truth, maybe she will even accept him as who he is and come with him to live her life in Italy. That fantasy made him even more abashed. He was truly under her spell, but he couldnât say he hated it.
So the two of them continued to their own truths and shared them with each other. Not realising that they were already drowning in their own lies. Maybe thatâs why the mafia boss and the witch argued with one another, not because they were mad that they were lied to but because they realised they never had to begin to lie to the other at all. They were probably more ashamed of themselves than they were angry at their lover. They simply didnât know how to react.
But it didnât seem to that (Y/N) nor Niccolò would take notes for tragedy that was bound to happen. Instead they just enjoyed the moment they had together. After all, their time was limited and why shouldnât they be allowed to live in a fantasy for once?
However, they were forced back into reality when on (Y/N)âs phone, a message from Ume popped up.
ÂťIâm sorry, but I have to go. There is an ongoing production where Iâm a part of.ÂŤ (Y/N) sighed and packed her stuff.
ÂťYeah, I understand. I have a meeting where I have to go. Will you be here tomorrow?ÂŤ
ÂťNo, my schedule is packed tomorrow⌠But how about exchange numbers? So we donât have to guess.ÂŤ
ÂťI would love that!ÂŤ Niccolo blushed as he smiled.
Their future selves still donât know if they should have said the truth here or just never contacted each other ever again. Maybe it was a mix of both.
âââââ
After the long shooting and a late apple pie with her friends, (Y/N) was finally home. Tsubaki, yet again, forgot to visit her. At this point, (Y/N) had no other choice but to adjust to it.
When she finally got out of the elevator and into her floor, she immediately noticed that something was wrong. The lights in her kitchen were on. The same kitchen that she never used because she couldnât even cook to save her own life. Someone was or is inside her home. Was it Tsubaki? No, it couldnât be him. It was set that this was her floor and privacy. He knew better.
(Y/N) took her lead out in the form of two black dice. Her lead had two forms, and the dice form was her go-to answer if she wanted to avoid a confrontation because in that form, the actress was able to change reality if her set conditions were met. She took quite a step as she followed halfway to the kitchen. (Y/N) was ready to launch her dice at the intruder when she noticed a familiar shade of white hair.
ÂťDid we not already discuss tha- My, welcome home, princess.ÂŤ
ÂťYouâre finally back, Shamrock!ÂŤ The actress immediately took her second father figure into her arms.
Both stayed in their embrace for a solid minute or two before they sat down at the dinner table. At least (Y/N) sat down; the subclass continued to cook for the princess of melancholy and narrated his mission in Austria. (Y/N) told him about her roles and sets. Neither of them noticed that they were speaking in Shamrockâs native language.
ÂťIsnât your birthday soon? We need to think about what you call me now. After all, who would believe that Iâm your father or uncle when we were just one year apart?ÂŤ Shamrock laughed and didnât notice his pseudo-daughterâs devastated face.
But⌠but you have been my uncle since ever! Nobody will know the truth! I-
Âť(Y/N), I know itâs hard for you, but it canât be helped. It was clear from the start that we would have to change family titles ever so often. I will, of course, forever stay your father, but you know humans donât know that vampires exist.ÂŤ Shamrock explained, but it felt on deaf ears.
It was the same explanation as every other time when she grew older. The hardest was when she officially turned older in Berkia. They always say it wouldnât change anything, but that was a lie. True at first, but soon after, everything changed. Slowly she got more responsibilities, more things she had to be careful about and less involved. The older (Y/N) got the more she was pushed to the sidelines until she never really saw any of them anymore. Until she became older than Tsubaki and he told her that it would be good for her to start living on her own.
ÂťIâm tired. Could you leave me alone, cousin.ÂŤ She asked coldly.
ÂťPrincess-ÂŤ Shamrock didnât get to say anything more because the eve already threw her dice and the subclass stood in the kitchen one floor below with the food he cooked for his daughter.
She had enough! She couldnât stay here today! She was going crazy. Desperate of not being alone she called her older friends but they were already sleeping. In a moment of pure loneliness she called the guy she only met twice.
Âť(Y/N)? Are you okay?ÂŤ
ÂťAre you free? Now?ÂŤ
