The Two Gay Geeks - Episode 397 - Part 4
Ben: …let's get started here.
Keith: So, one more time.
Keith: Yes, we are going to talk about spoilers. First question!
Keith: We don't know what, if anything, Adam said to the Tower at the Tower's funeral. Is he, too, holding out hope that they can get the Tower back?
KD: So, what I'll say about that is, I know what happened when Adam was in that room - I couldn't because of the constraints on the story and I was approaching my deadline - I couldn't describe what happened with everyone inside the River, uh, the River House. But Adam cried. That's all he did. He didn't talk, he simply cried.
KD: Sad story, but I will say this: Yes, Adam is going to hold out hope. Adam is exactly the type of character who's going to hold out hope that this story is not finished.
Ben: Adam's an eternal optimist.
Ben: And everything that we've seen him in. Ah, uh, with… even with, uh, you know when in rune's darkest moments, um, Adam is the one who I think supports Rune the most and holds him up so that Rune can get whatever he… whatever he needs to do, he can get done. And it's… it's… it's Adam, he's… he is such a shining beacon of optimism that it doesn't surprise me that he would be holding out hope.
Keith: Yep, and I… that was probably… I cried.
Ben: Oh, we all did, I think.
Ben: That was a heartbreaking moment. And I tell you, had you written that where it just… had we seen that in the book where Adam was just simply, you know, in the river house crying, I think I would have just lost it at that point.
KD: It was just at that point I thought it was just a little too much, um, because I had some other scenes which were kind of tugging on the heart strings, and I didn't want to put this in. And also, stylistically the way I did it, it was really difficult to just have one line which basically said “Adam cried”.
KD: I… I in my head when I imagine what would happen with Adam, um, I think he's the type of person who didn't try to show his emotions outside the room but once he was in it, and it was just him thinking of Lord Tower and the impact Lord Tower had on his life and on Quinn's life. He just… it was just sadness for him.
Ben: Yes, it is… the Tower was his Godfather, so naturally there's a closeness. I'm not the least bit surprised by any of that.
Keith: And following up on that…
Ben: …can you give any clues about the fate of the Tower? It's been a long time since me and all your other readers, we were crushed by the loss of this character. And… and this one really… it hit all of us. Um, not knowing him… you know I… I know not him there to always back Rune up is important, but still.
KD: [Laughs] I… you know there are some readers who really want me to answer this question, because, uh, they, well, like I do when I love a certain series, I get invested in the characters, too, and I certainly don't appreciate uncertainty over characters I absolutely love. I wouldn't want to go years and years without knowing what happens to them. So, but what I can tell you about the Tower is, there was, well, it was a story I tell… I've told it in person to people. I don't know if I've ever actually recorded it. So, this is the first time I've ever been recorded, uh, admitting this and hopefully I don't get someone else in trouble. But one of my beta readers, um, when she read that scene, uh, got incredibly frustrated and she was like “Well, fine, I guess the Tower is not gonna retire on a beach with Mayan”. At the moment that she said that I… I remember that moment, like, I just started crying and realized how much… how difficult time I was having with this as well. And I suppose, if you want to know what happens to the Tower, I'd answer in Quinn's voice: “Well, yeah, sometimes he retires on a beach and sometimes he doesn't.”
KD: The door is open. It's not closed. The Tower's presence is going to be omnipresent in the next trilogy. Whether he's there or not, so much of everything that happens revolves around him not being there. But as for what the future plans are, I guess I would ask readers to trust me. If you know who I am as a writer and you know what I think about my characters you know that, number one, I… I… it's a story that tries to bring people together, but, number two, I try to subvert your expectations. So, it might not happen when you think it it's gonna happen but you're going to learn more about this story. It simply hasn't ended. There will be more. Rune is going to be very persistent.
Keith: Cool! Not the least bit surprised.
