Ā Ā Ā Granted, theyāre not the biggest Pokemon around (Lyraās about equal height as an average one, and sheās already far from tall), but theyāre definitely rotound, hard to hide, and Lyraās specifically, and the target of her search, is taller than most in his species. Itās a recipe that should mean Wynton is an easy Pokemon to keep track of, but her history shows that Lyra either needs real thick glasses or Wynton is just really interested in everything except the road in front of him. Itās the latter. Heās easily distracted, lovable as he may be otherwise.
Ā Ā Ā She tightens the denim jacket around her shoulders closer to her form as a quick gust of wind nips at her. She casts her eyes up, meeting the familiar shape of her Crobat, cast against the gray light of the pale morning and the dim street lights. Skipping a step forward while Mistral flaps down to meet her, Lyra keeps her coat close to her person. Sheād imagined Mistral was he origin of the sudden breeze, but itās not like he can help it. Heās only trying to help her find their friend, in the end.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āAny luck out there?ā she asks, blinking in worry when her companion only shakes his head sadly. Her fingers twitch into her sleeves, a grumble in her throat.

Sometimes, Morty likes to take a walk with his Pokemon for some peace and solitude. While he performs his responsibilities dutifully, it can get a bit monotonous or on rare occasions, rather stressful. As his abilities hinges on his inner control, whenever he feels like the weight is heavier than he likes, heāll disengage and do other stuff that helps it slide off his back. Walking through the picturesque greenery around Ecruteak often does the job.
It has been a pretty pack week, and now that things are winding down, he decides on talking a leisurely stroll through Route 37. Itās a pretty popular route for Trainers, marked by three Apricorn trees. Morty is not worried about being pulled into a random battle, for most people knows who he is. Unless itās within a Gym, he has the right to decline battles. This way, no one can say that heās handing out badges outside of the League.
With Minnie the shiny Mimikyu by his side -- sheās still new, and he wants to show her around Johto -- the pair made their way further down the route. Minnie looks around the new scenery, occasionally stopping to further examine stuff. He lets her pick an a ripe Apricot so she could hold it in her hands. As sheās busy rolling it around, he suddenly finds himself approached by someone-- a very familiar someone, to be precise.
Morty takes a moment to process her words, then answers her.Ā āI might not have seen a Quagsire during my walk, but I do know who Wynton is.ā The blond flashes Lyra a friendly smile. How could he forget her, after the battles that they had? While the actual match didnāt leave him much of an impression, itās the rematch that she requested for a fairer result that allows him to see that sheās more than just a young Trainer with strong Pokemon.
āI have to say, it is quite a pleasant surprise to see you here, Lyra. Iād say itās been a rather long time since our rematch, no?ā

A week-long research expedition to Route 209 wasnāt supposedĀ to be this difficult. If Blanche had known sooner, sheād have put it off longer.
What had started out as an oddity Blanche was well prepared to dismiss and forget about had, eventually, escalated into an irritation. After a couple days, said irritation was well on its way to becoming something far more bothersome.

Morty eyes the individual. Tall, lean, has good features. Looks unassuming, but then again, spirits are rarely picky in who they choose to haunt. He doesnāt know their history -- maybe itās spotless, maybe theyāre some sort of criminal -- to tell the reason why. Still, Morty is not a medium who turns away potential cases. If the human deserves it, fine but he just wants to help the spirit move on.
He weighs his pros and cons, considers if itās worth sidetracking for. Obviously, theyāre not his client but thereās evidently something of the supernatural variety going on. Morty canāt tell if itās because of their close proximity to Lost Tower, or itās been tagging along far longer. The only way he can figure things out is by approaching and just go straight for it.
Well... he suppose it wonāt rest well in his conscious if it turns out worse that he imagined. Morty adjusts his scarf, stands a little straighter and walks towards the stranger. His eyes are a little sharp, unnerving even to look at as he looks at the area just above the personās shoulder. Something is attached, it seems like. No describable features that he can see just yet.
āExcuse me,ā Morty greets when heās close enough. A respectable distance that shouldnāt spook them and would give him wiggle room to step back in the event of anything unexpected happening. Spirits can be wildly unpredictable with their actions. This one is docile for the time being, which checks off a few things from his mental list.Ā
He has considered on what to say, but with his own time constraints, itās best to just go straight to the point.Ā āIām a spirit medium who can see spirits, and right now, I see one thatās attached to you. If youād like me to help you out in dealing with this, or youād like me to leave, just say the word. Though I strongly suggest that you get help with it, before it can manifest into something worse,ā he says, keeping his tone and expression perfectly neutral.Ā Ā
Throughout the years, Morty found that some of the best spots to gain information on the supernatural is, surprisingly, online. Sure, itās like finding a diamond in the rough; a nugget of truth in a mountain of lies but when he finds a trustworthy piece, it often leads to some of his tougher cases to date. Regardless of where you are in the world, you can be a victim of the supernatural, and thatās where he comes in.
Itās not like he can advertise his services in the conventional sense. Thereās a matter of secrecy, not to mention some rules listed in his contract with the League. Most of his investigations were off the books, so to speak. Done during the weekends or his off days, where heās allowed to spend it as he likes. Thatās where the internet helps him. Itās really easy to put up an ad on online forums. The success is another story entirely, but at least he has something to do outside of battling, paperwork and making protective tags.
Whenever he puts up an ad as an unaffiliated spirit medium, he gets a few nibbles. Morty skims through their request, and if he deems it too ridiculous, he ignores them. Itās not his first time navigating through this sea of anonymity, so heās used to filtering out the garbage and focusing on the real gems. Like this one request sent to him by an interested party.
From what he can tell, their manager had been acting strangely and recently, had shown signs of being possessed. The classic signs were there-- erratic behavior, jerky movements and most importantly, a bit of levitating. That really canāt be explain as anything but possession, so Morty decides on taking on this case. They discussed briefly on a meeting spot, and thatās how he found himself in the Sinnoh region on a Saturday a week later. These things needed to be dealt quickly before the damage is irreversible.
Morty had told his client that heād be the blond guy in purple, so he waits patiently in front of the meeting spot for anyone that appeared to look for him. Thereās a chance that this might be a hoax, but he truly feels like this particular requester was sincere in his message for help.Ā
Well, if anything, he gets a trip out of this. If itās a bust, he could just head to Eterna Forest and search for a Rotom, a Pokemon heād been meaning to add to his roster for quite some time now. Still, he keeps his eyes peeled for his anonymous client.Ā
Yes, heād known for a while now that, due to his illness that heād acquired some months ago, that the lungs living within him were⦠not his own. Or at least, they were not to start with. However, the nature of how this all came to be was⦠rather hazy, and frankly, he did not care.

Morty knows that a fair number of people frequented this little beach house in Unova, but he didnāt expect that heād meet someone that is... otherworldly, to put it mildly. And he doesnāt mean that in the supernatural sense either. Maybe thatās a fitting category, but he lacks information to make a proper classification. Morty didnāt even expect to find his interest piqued so much, but it has, and heās keeping a quiet eye on this individual.
It had been a relatively peaceful evening. He had time to visit the beach house after he finished with some business in Unova. Morty lounged out on the deck, merely enjoying the atmosphere before the person of interest came up to him -- Drex was his name, if he remembers correctly -- with questions about his profession becoming the meat of their conversation as it went on. A simple time passer, until the being shimmered into view.
Mortyās gaze immediately flickered to the... creature, for thatās the only way he could have described it. Human in appearance but with aquatic like appendages, what grabbed his attention more than his looks was the pure and utter hatred that disfigured his visage. It stabbed Drex with its hand from behind, causing the poor man to collapse under the strain. Morty didnāt know what their history was, but he wonāt allow a spirit to harm a human under his watch.
His protection tags kept it at bay, and prior to its disappearance, he thinks he heard whispers of you are ignorant you do not understand before that too fades away like a gentle breeze. Morty merely steps aside, instructing someone else to bring Drex inside as he contemplates more on this issue. He did give strict instructions to not take off the tag, as well as to see him again the next day for a check-up. Thereās something going on here, but heāll need Drex to be alive and well to get to the bottom of it.
Morty spent the rest of the night making more protection wards, some of which mixed with his blood for a stronger effect. He doesnāt realize the time until soft knocks came from his door. He rubs at his eyes for a moment, then sits up straighter.Ā āCome in,ā he says, loud enough for his guest to hear. Itās not long before Drex shuffles into his room. Morty gestures at him to take a seat on the edge of the bed.
āI imagine that you didnāt take off the tags, right? Good, that should keep you safe for now, but the effect wouldnāt last for very long if thereās constant resistance from the one the tag is meant to protect you from,ā Morty immediately delves in, bringing himself closer to inspect the tag. It looks to be intact still, albeit he notices a small portion of the character near the bottom was slightly faded. Ah, itās definitely resisting.
āHave you felt any other pain since? Or the general feeling of being watched? Maybe seeing something from the corner of your eye?ā Morty looks at Drex, face smoothed in professionalism.Ā āIf you have any questions, Iāll try my best to answer them.ā

The quiet ambiance of Johto was always a refreshing change from the silent deserts of Orre. Even after all his time already spent in other regions, Michael still marveled at just how plentiful they were in nature - the still living kind - and Pokemon. Even on an early morning like this, sitting at the top of the Bell Tower overlooking the snow-dusted forest, he could hear the rustling of leaves, the distant cries of bird Pokemon, and Rattata scuffling about in the rafters. The beautiful scenery of what may well have been all of Johto spread out before him under the soft orange sky only added to the effect.
It was peaceful, immensely relaxing, and Michael had been admiring it for long enough to have grown very bored.

Well then, that sort peppiness might be too much this early in the morning, but Morty could appreciate it the enthusiasm. He merely watched in mild amusement as the young man rambled on about the tower and the city. Ecruteak can have that effect on people, though it depended on how one took in the atmosphere. This city could either be a calming glimpse of the past or a quiet, boring place.
Morty shook his head at the apology, hiding a soft laugh behind a closed fist.Ā āNo, no, itās fine. It was interesting to hear what others thought about Ecruteak. It sounds like youāre quite well informed for a visitor to the city,ā he replies, casting another glance at the tower.Ā āIt might be weathered from age, but the tower still represents the years worth of history that makes Ecruteak a slice of the past, if you will.ā
The blond returns the excited smile with a softer smile of his own, accepting the offered hand. He gives it a little shake.Ā āIt is nice to meet you, Micheal. My name is... Jun Matsuba, but most people around here call me Morty.ā His hand falls back to his side, and he smiles, giving another short bow.Ā āOnce again, I welcome you to the city, not as a citizen but as Ecruteak Cityās Gym Leader. It is always a pleasure to see visitors here.ā
With that introduction out of the way, he dips his head in the Jolteonās direction.Ā āAnd how may I address your companion? They seem very well behaved, and healthy looking as well. One of the Kimono Girls, Sayo, would be very impressed at the coat of your Jolteon. Her companion is a Jolteon as well, and Iāve seen how well she takes care of him.ā
Morty leans back a little, taking them both in.Ā āYou two possessed the air of travelers. Would it be impudent of me to assume that youāve come from a faraway region?ā
[secret santa] A vaguely misshapen package, red wrapping paper held together with sticky tape. Inside, a mass of soft, knitted lavenderā a sweater, slightly oversized to be comfortable. The edges and wrists are adorned with an understated but cute pattern of roundish cartoon ghosts. The material has been meticulously chosen for its texture, to be as pleasing as possible. Stuck to a sleeve, post-it-note note: "It's probably really cold in Kanto. You must have many, but I still hope you like it."
Morty has to say he was pleasantly surprised when he receives the package. From the touch alone, he can guess that itās some sort of cloth or article of clothing. Once he unwraps it, what heās greeted with was a soft knitted lavender sweater. He takes a moment to take in the stitching, from the design itself all the way to the little carton ghosts that lined the wrists. Picking up the post it note, a soft smile stretches across his lips.
He easily slides out of his current sweater, slipping on the new one. Morty quietly marvels at how soft it feels. Whoever his Secret Santa was, they were very thoughtful to gift him this. Heāll make sure to wear it the next time he goes to the gym.
The blonde tensed up at hearingĀ āExcuse me,ā annoyed at the possibility of some GTS worker following him out of the building. He turned around, ready to give them a piece of his mind, but he saw a very familiar man in purple. Where have I seen him? Volkner wondered, trying to think. Oh, right, they met at the PWT at one point. That was where theyād met, which explained why he thought it was so long since their last meeting.
āAh⦠Yeah. Nice to meet - er - see you too,ā Volkner said.Ā āYou can still be surprised, Jublife isnāt exactly my favorite place to be,ā Volkner added. He wasnāt sure what the guyās name was, so he tried to jog his memory. Morty, probably.Ā āMorty, right? That was your name? Iām really bad with names, sorry.ā
Volkner wasnāt really sure how to handle the situation. After all, he did plan to spend the day alone. But he couldnāt just leave, now, could he? Small talk was probably the right thing to doā¦Ā āWhy are you doing here?ā Volkner asked. He was going to sayĀ āWhy are you hereā initially, but midway he realized what that would sound like, so he changed meaning.
ā¦Yeah, he wasnāt the greatest at social interaction, especially when his morning had been filled up with annoying GTS workers.
Volkner looked to be a little tense, he quietly noted. Morty spotted the irritated look that melted into neutrality upon recognition. Still, he remained quiet, merely listening to his stumbling words. Someone who wasnāt accustomed to social interactions? It might be nerves, but having seen the man in battle, it was hard to place that steady, strong figure that commanded his Pokemon to victory to the person standing in front of him.
Still, Morty maintained that pleasant smile, hoping that itāll help ease the other.Ā āYes, thatās correct. It is alright. I can understand that sort of trouble.ā Though in his case, it was more about the spirits that he interact on a daily basis. Some spirits couldnāt recall the names that they had prior to their deaths, while others were best not to utter unless he wanted to be cursed. So he usually recognized faces even if their names slipped past his memories.Ā
At the question, he hummed softly, adjusting the pack on his back.Ā āWell, Iāve ventured all the way to Sinnoh because Iām in search of a particular Pokemon.ā Hmm, given the typing, perhaps Volkner had some info on the Rotom. It was worth a shot.Ā āAs my specialty is Ghost-types, Iām always looking for new Ghost-types to be my companions. There are still plenty of things that people are unaware of about them, and Iād like to learn all I can.ā
Morty tipped his head at Volkner.Ā āPerhaps you have heard about it? Iām seeking for Rotom, an Electric / Ghost type Pokemon. Iāve heard that itās elusive, but could be found here in Sinnoh.ā
Ā Ā Ā Falkner freezes as Morty embraces himĀ ā heās never been big on expressing PHYSICAL emotion. Or verbal, but one step at a time⦠Likely out of awkwardness more than anything else ; but after a moment, he relaxes into the touch. For a second he returns the gesture, face pressed into Mortyās shirt. Warm, comfortingā¦
Ā Ā Ā Morty pulls away, and Falkner focuses desperately on composing himself. Morty appears as calm as ever, his expression settled into the faintest of smiles.
Ā Ā Ā āThatās okay,ā he replies quickly, taking a step back to grab his phone off the counter. The back panels to the house were already closed.Ā āI finished most of the cleaning this morningĀ ā we can head out.ā

Morty nods, stepping outside as Falkner finishes closing up. He takes a moment to observe his front yard, indulging in a few memories of their childhood. Back when he lacked the confidence that he had today, Morty preferred the quietude of the outdoors than the stuffy indoors. He wasnāt interested in what the adults were talking about, so heād quietly left and hid out here. Falkner would join him, and theyād spend time together.
His attention returns to the present when Falkner joins him, donned in a light grey hoodie that amusingly wasnāt one of his. Morty had long since lost track the number of clothes that FalknerĀ āpilferedā from his closet, but he didnāt mind. Only his best friend had that right, a show of comfort and trust on his end. As a spirit medium, itās not wise to hand any personal belonging to strangers. Who knows what sort of curses theyād inflict on him, if he was unlucky enough?
With a nod, Morty acts as his silent shadow. He walks just a step behind him on his left so he wasnāt in Falknerās blind spot. No words were exchanged between, not yet. Heās content with just enjoying the presence of his loved one, and the feel of the sun kissing his skin. Heās naturally a little cold to the touch, a side effect of being surrounded by Ghost-types and spirits all the time. Thus, he appreciates bright yet warm days like this.Ā
At Falknerās question, he hums, taking a moment to consider his answer.Ā āWell... itās been pretty tame when it comes to Gym challengers. I received a few challengers from Trainers of different regions who decided to challenge the Gyms in no particular order.ā Uncommon but itās not against the rules or anything. All of them had Pokemon tailored to Trainers that had different experiences, number of Gym badges and the like. Itās just more the norm to see new Trainers starting from Violet City.
āAs opposed to oddities... I did went to Unova to deal with a haunted house. It seems that the building, located deep within a forest, used to be the home of a woman and her three children. Iāll spare you the details, but an incident occurred that trapped their souls to the home by an even stronger spirit -- this one filled with hatred and revenge. It had been one of the tougher ones Iāve dealt with in quite some time, but the vengeful one was exorcised and the others were freed to move on.ā
Morty pauses after that long explanation, letting Falkner absorb the tale first.Ā āWhat about you? How has the Gym been?ā A soft chuckle.Ā āAny overenthusiastic new Trainer who thought they could take the world by storm with their starter Pokemon?ā
all journeys have secret destinationsĀ || Morty & Micheal
winter event thread || @underdarkwings
The red and yellow leaves were already scattering the grounds of the sacred Bell Tower, even when Winter welcomed them weeks ago. Bell Tower, the very tower where Ho-Oh roosted upon when the great lord of the sky visited the humble city of Ecruteak centuries ago. The very tower that once stood with its twin before it was fatefully burnt to the ground. Oh, the three beasts caught within the raging inferno, how they dying roars would have been heart wrenching. The great Ho-Oh had revived them and now they roam Johto, showing themselves only to the lucky-- or the worthy.
Lips forming a small crescent moon, amethyst eyes slowly slid shut as Morty allowed his senses to soak in the myriad sensations of brimming life that surrounds the millennium old forest. From the small woodling Pokemon to the forever long trees, each one of Ho-Ohās - or Mewās and Arceusā, depending on oneās branch of religion - soul kissed creatures offers up various prayers and murmurs of eternal gratitude in their own language for the gift of life the godly creature had bestowed upon them.
A twinge of regret fills his heart, a regret to humanity in general. With the fast age of modernizing rapidly encircling their clutches on populated areas, the distinctly traditional practice of praying to the being that basically allowed them to live on this planet slowly died out. Kids these days do not appreciate what other, seemingly less intellectual creatures did and that saddened the Leader. Theyāre distracted by the riches of the material world and never really thought about Death until theyāre old or itās far too late.
Sufficiently humbled by the various living beings that expresses their undying devotion to their Maker, Morty figured that he too should partake in this spiritually calming practice. Golden tresses ruffled by the light zephyrs that brushed past did not distract him from approaching the structure hidden just underneath the iconic Bell Towerās massive shadow. A secluded little shrine nestled within the loving embrace of surrounding trees made for a truly serene atmosphere.
Kneeling in front of the well kept shrine, Morty clasps his hands together, his head dipping reverently. The clairvoyant male allowed himself to succumb into the routine of singing praises, expressing gratitude and uttering hopes to the deity that he worshiped and wished to meet within his terribly short lifetime, Ho-Oh under his own power. He always entered this Zen-like mode that briefly cut off all connections to the outside world.
Serene like silence settles comfortably within the preserved area, broken only by the sound of dry leaves scraping against the cobble stoned path whenever the wind toys around with it. As this is a common routine for him, Morty stays in the same position for around ten minutes with no fidgety twitches. Finishing off with one final murmur, the blonde swiftly rose to full height with the graciousness and fulfillment of a well rested feline.
Today is one of his off days, so thereās no immediate obligation to return to the Gym. Itās not like heās getting a lot of challengers these days either. With the holidays fast approaching, only the most hardened battlers graces his city. Most would prefer to be back home, celebrating with their loved ones. Morty too plans on visiting his parents next week but until then, heās content on doing his own things.
Hmm... itās been awhile since he last done some baking. It wouldnāt be a bad idea in making some festive treats. Itāll be something he could store in his home for guests, or bring it to the annual League party near the end of the month. With that plan in mind, he begins to make his journey back to the city center. Though, within a few steps, he sees a figure emerging from the tower.
A young man, dressed in a different style of clothing with a Jolteon by his side. Morty could tell from a glance that he is a visitor. Perhaps checking the city out while thereās still people bustling about? It gets notoriously quiet the closer they get to the end of the year, for most of the locals prefer to stay home and perform various traditions with their loved ones from Christmas all the way up to the New Years.
Having plenty of time, Morty decides to greet him. He is Ecruteakās Gym Leader, after all. It is his duty to make visitors to their humble city feel welcomed.
āGood morning,ā he greets when their paths crossed, a pleasant smile to his lips.Ā āItās quite early to be out here. Usually, itās only the most devout of monks and spiritualists thatās out and about. Though--ā Morty casts a glance at the impressive tower.Ā ā--I could also understand that youād be attracted to visit this tower as soon as possible.ā He gives a little bow.Ā āWelcome to Ecruteak City. A city that even now bears the marks of its history, with this tower being a prime example. Part of our cityās pride and joy, if you will.ā

Man, the amateurs working at the GTS had somehow managed to mess things up again and of course they relied on Volkner to fix it. Why wouldnāt they? Itās not like Volkner had plans for Saturday mornings or anything. Itās not like Volkner had a social life. Itās not like Volkner had challengers to attend to, or anything. ā¦Well, he didnāt really have any of those things. But still, Volkner didnāt want to⦠Sigh. It was part of his duty as a leader, so the shining shocking star decided he could bear with it for a bit. ā¦Not for too long, though.

It was pretty obvious that he had a fondness of Ghost-types. While it might have stemmed from his abilities, he liked to believe that even without it, heād still find the type appealing. They were mysterious, unfathomable to some people. Were they actually Pokemon? Are they even alive? The field of Pokemon research had made strides since the discovery of Ghost-types, but it still lagged behind other, more common types.
Which was why he conducted his own studies. Morty liked to see the limits of his favored type, partially to satisfy his own curiosity, partially to give him more options when it came to strategies. Ghost-types, while lacking a lot of type disadvantages, couldnāt deal a lot of Super Effective hits either. Thus, he had to rely more on their natural advantages, such as their ability to phase through solid objects or go invisible.
But even that would falter under the might of a strong Pokemon with an experienced Trainer leading it. Thus exists the need for his own personal research. Morty had a good collection of Ghost-types under his belt, but a particular Pokemon remained out of his grasp. The ever elusive Rotom. He read up everything that he could about it, and the concept of an Electric / Ghost type that could gain different typing depending on its form change definitely appealed to him.
Morty would love to have one in his team, but they were pretty hard to find. Some books claimed that Rotom were manmade, other said that they only emerged in abandoned electronic factories. There were no sightings of Rotom here in Johto, but his search had led him to entries about Eterna Forest. Apparently, there was an abandoned mansion there whereĀ āghost sightingsā matched to what Rotom were reported to do when it came in contact with humans in its territory.
Which was why he decided to fly over to Sinnoh during a relatively free weekend. Morty definitely want to capture one by the end of this trip, but he would be satisfied with information too. It just meant better preparation for his next visit. He took one of the daily flights to Sinnoh, landing him in Jubilife Cityās airport. The gym leader packed enough for a two night stay and supplies to camp out if needed.
He left the airport, taking in the bustling atmosphere of Jubilife. It was large, but it didnāt seem as busy as Goldenrod. Then again, he was in that awkward time of after lunch hour but before the time most office workers finished their job for the day. This suited him just fine. The less crowds he faced, the better. Morty was all set to leave the city but during his walk to the city exit, he just so happened to make a glance to his left and spotted something interesting.
Now, blond hair wasnāt uncommon, but he could never forget that particular shade of dirty yellow. Morty paused in his steps, merely staring at the figure who seemed to be wandering aimlessly down the path. Once he confirmed the otherās identity, he made a detour and approached him.
āExcuse me,ā he called out, a friendly smile plastered on his face.Ā āVolkner, right? Itās been quite some time since our last meeting.ā Morty continued.Ā āI would say that itās a surprise to meet you here but--ā A soft chuckle.Ā ā--Iād be the more surprising figure, for being so far from home. It is nice to see you again.ā
*Please note: this entire thread should be assumed to have a Death Mention TW, even if a reply fails to tag it as so ( we might forget, thatās all )
Wes never spoke much about his home life; he never felt the need to. After all, it was a quaint little home that mostly held sentimental value to him ā a house thatād been in his familyās name for five generations now. He wasnāt sure if that was something to be proud of, considering, nowadays, that home rested in the middle of the slums of Pyrite, but back upon its creation, it was built when the city was a vast mining town.Ā
And⦠considering said mining town was one of the first that eventually uprooted the natural grassy resources and was the catalyst for turning the region into an abandoned wasteland with no foliage in sight to support Pokemon habitats, well⦠also something not to be proud of.
And you wonder why he never talked much about his home life.

Through his own personal observations, he concluded that individuals who had spirits tethered to them or had brushes with death tend to have a sort of presence stuck to them. It was the same with grudges and curses, but they donāt permeate as strongly as the aforementioned categories. Those were much harder to deal with, and there really is no way to fully erase certain presences. All he could offer was some charms to mute it.
So, when he met one Wes Wagner, he caught his attention immediately.
Morty had looked at him once and knew that there was something attached to him. Not necessarily an actual tethered spirit, but a strong enough presence that spoke of a story just begging him to uncover. Partially his curiosity wanted him to learn more, but he also knew that leaving it just like that could lead to trouble in the future. It was just a matter of finding an appropriate way to approach the other as they were only acquaintances at best.
When he finally did, and explained to him the presence he felt, Wes seemed reluctant to share the story of his life, but he was cooperative nonetheless. Morty listened carefully, not once interrupting the story as his mind came up with his own conclusions. It was only after the tale ended that Morty requested to see this house for himself. People who committed suicide will almost never move on in peace, and given the circumstances that led to it, Wesā father was definitely still around.
Wes agreed to it, and he made his first trip to the Orre region. It was a stark difference than the lush surroundings of Johto, and the weather was hot yet dusty that he couldnāt completely discard his usual clothing. After rolling up the sleeves -- revealing a long scar that looked like someone had tried to slice his arm right down the center -- it was a long drive to their destination. Morty spent it with idle talk, but obviously the atmosphere is pretty heavy.
They made the last trek of their journey through walking, and even without Wes announcing their arrival, he could already feel it. A house festering in negative energy -- it wasnāt the first one heād encountered in his life. Morty didnāt say anything to Wes, merely staring at the house as he slowly approached it. If he were a lesser spirit medium, this sickeningly heavy feeling might have been overwhelming, but he had come prepared, so it merely felt like something was pressing against the edges of his mind.
āQuite frankly, Iām surprised that you have lived in this house for so long and never felt anything out of the ordinary. Even being spiritually unaware, spirits who had festered for this long would have emitted an odd presence-- the ones where youād say it feels like thereās someone watching you, and all that,ā Morty spoke up at last, glancing at Wes.Ā āThe fact that you havenāt... either its only contained within the room, or he just never bothered you.ā
His gaze fell back on the house.Ā āNevertheless, Iāll only know better once we get there.ā
Morty always considered that half of his job was when he goes out and investigate supernatural incidents. Being a Gym Leader was fulfilling and all, but there was just a stronger sense of it when he gets to help spirits move on. This was something only a handful of people can do and he was included in that statistic. His abilities does not make him a freak, but rather it was a means to helpĀ āpeopleā one last time.Ā
Which was why he was willing to make these trips. Putting up an ad that offered his services on the web does attract all sorts of folk, from the trolls to the crazy, but then there would be the occasional messages that really caught his attention. While he canāt guarantee that it was truly the act of a spirit just from reading through, if it brought up enough points of interest, he would consider the request. Then it was a matter of finding the right time to go there.
This time, one such request brought him to the northern region of Sinnoh. A nice, cold place that heād fit in right away. Morty figured that if things happened smoothly, heād have some time to explore a place or two in this region. It was the weekend, so it wouldnāt interfere with his duties anyway. He had two Gym Trainers act as his proxy in the mean time. They were plenty tough on their own, thus he could move freely without much worry.
His destination was Route 209, the area where the Lost Tower resided. Places that as a Pokemonās final resting ground was just a hot spot for spirits, but apparently this time around, the requester claimed that it was the spirit of his departed Magmar that was causing disturbances. They swore that they could see glimpses of Magmarās spirit wandering about, bringing about a bit of a haunted feel -- well, more than the usual -- to the area.
There were the occasional instances where a Pokemon was unable to move on in peace. Their spirit would linger, be it in their alive state or had morphed into a mysterious black figure. Often times, they just needed a nudge into the right direction. Hopefully, heād be able to do so peacefully without the need to battle. No need to cause more pain to both trainer and Pokemon.
His trip to Route 209 wasnāt too troublesome, but when he stepped into the area, he felt something entering his senses. It was distracting in the sense that he felt a culmination of a lot of spiritual energy coming from somewhere down the route. It was different from the energy that usually came from burial grounds. This was concentrated, so either an entity of its own or it was attached to a human.
Being both wary and curious, Morty walked further down the road, keeping his senses peeled on the signature. He was getting closer until his eyes zeroed in on an individual. Based from the spiritual energy that was wafting off from this person, he found his guy.Ā
Morty didnāt immediately approached, instead he observed from afar, trying to figure out what was happening exactly.

Ā Ā Ā While the yearly surge of trainers is familiar and routine, Falkner still misses the freedom to leave Violet when able. When not focused explicitly on his work, he admits his house can feel rather LONELY. Violet City is a quiet town, with quiet residents, and a quiet gym leader. His birds fill the gaps with melodies and the intermittent screechĀ ā itās enough, most days, coupled with calls to Morty and Janine when their schedules align.Ā
Ā Ā Ā But a much needed break allows Morty to visit. Normally, Falkner would have no problem with flying to Ecruteak to save Morty the trouble, but the plan was to visit the Ruins. They used to be the space heād flee to when younger and in desperate need of a breakĀ ā from his father, from League responsibilities, from slowly suffocating daily routines.Ā
Ā Ā Ā He hasnāt been in quite some time.

The wait didnāt take too long. Knowing Falkner, he was probably doing some light chores or busying himself until it was time for their meet-up. His ears picked up the light footsteps, and his smile widened a touch to see Falkner in the flesh. He was wearing a simple T-shirt and dark jeans-- a sign that he was fresh off from cleaning the aviary. It was a good look on him. His usual Gym Leader attire always looked pleasing to the eye, but Falkner in casual clothes was a whole different level of attractiveness.Ā
With permission given, he heads in, shoulders briefly brushing against Falkerās as he side steps, before turning to properly face him.Ā āHere I am,ā he responded, his smile softening. It truly was a pleasure to see him again after so long. Calls and texts just couldnāt compete with actually seeing him with his own two eyes. Maybe he was exaggerating just a bit, but Falkner is one of his precious people. He sat firmly in his heart, so much so that he couldnāt deny feeling an ache disappear now that he was here.
( He was quietly gushing like a lover returning home after so long, but he thinks thatās what they are, so itās fine )
Hearing Falknerās words made something within him warm, and he briefly pulled his best friend into a brief yet firm hug, taking a step back with his arms gently grasping his forearms. Mortyās eyes are fond, his smile happy.Ā āI missed you too.ā His eyes unabashedly took in the bluenette, pleased to note that he looked well.Ā āI know that you would face the most challengers, given your position, so Iām happy that youāre doing well.ā
His hands lingered for a moment longer before they dropped to his side. Morty found it quite adorable on the shade of red that Falkner could be, but he refrained himself from commenting on it. He didnāt want to embarrass his best friend to death. Not only would it be, well, an embarrassing way to go, he wasnāt going to squander their chances of spending some quality time with one another. This was their time, and he wanted to enjoy it to the fullest.
āI apologize for dropping in unannounced, but I arrived earlier than expected. Instead of just loitering around at our meeting spot, I figured Iād come straight to your place to surprise you,ā Morty said, his expression showing a faint smugness that was gone in the blink of an eye. He thinks that Falkner is quite surprised indeed. If not from his arrival, then from the hug.
āSo, are we set to go? Or are you still in the middle of something? I can offer my assistance to speed things along, if youād like.ā
