The opening credits for episodes of Pride & Prejudice 1995 work like a tranquilizer. The piano riff, the sprightly horns, the sweetly singing strings that resolve into harmonious flutes, all while watching exquisite hand embroidery. 25 years of conditioning leaves me instantly soothed.

Les Liaisons dangereuses: Valmont vs Dangerous Liaisons

This time I’m comparing two adaptations of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ book Les Liaisons dangereuses. This time I have not read the book myself, but I do have semi good grasp of the plot. I am comparing two film adaptations that came out almost the same year, 1988 film Dangerous Liaisons directed by Stephen Frears, and 1989 Valmont directed by Miloš Forman (director of Amadeus).

The book is about two French aristocrats, Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont, playing cruel games on other people. It is definitely not the most cheerful work, but both films were enjoyable in their own way. I also included bonus round of the probably most famous adaptation of the movie in the end of the presentation.

Dangerous Liaisons (1988) - Glenn Close as Marquise de Merteuil wearing an ivory brocade robe à la française, heavily embellished with floral embroideries and pleated ribbon appliques on the skirt and on the bodice.

Madonna wore the same dress for her “Marie Antoinette” performance at the MTV Video Music Awards 1990.

The costumes were designed by James Acheson.
