When we were in Los Angeles last month we stayed at what was  formerly known as the Hollywood Hawaiian Hotel a few nights, seen here, also sung about in the Warren Zevon song Desperados Under the Eaves:

I was sitting in the Hollywood Hawaiian Hotel I was staring in my empty coffee cup I was thinking that the gypsy wasn’t lyin’ All the salty margaritas in Los Angeles I’m gonna drink ‘em up

It’s now an apartment complex, but it’s still got the look and feel of what’s conveyed in the photographs here. Our host told us this factoid and also mentioned that Woody Allen lived there too. So, of course I looked up all of the information I could about the place’s intersection with rock and roll history. Here’s what I found:

According to Zevon’s son, Zevon had originally been banished to the Tropicana Hotel after a fight with his wife. When he couldn’t afford the deluxe accommodations anymore, he moved to the Hollywood Hawaiian where the liner notes of Preludes: Rare and Unreleased Recordings say he “spent several weeks stepping over the junkies who blocked his doorway and sharing stories with the winos camped out on the corner of Yucca and Gower.”

Princess Grace Apartments (formerly the Hollywood Hawaiian Hotel), 1801 Yucca St. Catered to Brit rockers of the '70s, including Pink Floyd, the Kinks and others. During a 1971 tour break here, Fleetwood Mac guitarist Jeremy Spencer told band members he was just nipping out for some cigs. They didn’t see him again for two years - he’d joined a religious cult.
