Anu and Padomay predate both time and other, more familiar deities such as Mara, Stendarr, etc. The interaction of stasis and change produced Aurbis, the universe. Within Aurbis: Oblivion, Aetherius, Mundus, and the Void.
Anu rebirthed its soul to produce Anui-El, everlasting light and the soul of all things. Padomay rebirthed its soul to produce Sithis, the void.
When Anui-El rebirthed as Auri-El (more familiarly: Akatosh) time began, and when Sithis rebirthed as Lorkhan, Sithis’ wish for Lorkhan was to destroy.
Interestingly: Lorkhan’s nature is not one of destruction, but of creation: ‘his’ (Lorkhan is often gendered as male) body compromises Nirn, the planet/plane that Tamriel and all living things, daedra excluded, live on. At the same time, Lorkhan was destroyed so that Nirn could exist, but according to many renditions of creation myths, he ‘tricked’ the other Aedra - their energy cost to creat Nirn was so great that they were trapped in Mundus (‘the world’, the sphere where both Nirn and the remnants of the creator Aedra dwell) forever, severing them (and their supposed descendants, the mer) from Aetherius.
Auri-El is a deity favored by mer, while Lorkhan is a deity favored by men. Lorkhan is neither Aedra nor Daedra, but something in-between.
All reincarnations are direct opposites of one another, and exert opposite pulls of influence. However, because Lorkhan has ‘died’ (effectively disappeared from existence), he is often referred to as “The Missing God” and exerts his influence on Nirn via other, more indirect means, usually agents named “Shezarrines”. Akatosh leads most pantheons as the First God, but does not exclusively aid mer.
Both Akatosh and Lorkhan are the only truly ubiquitous deities that show up in every race’s pantheon.

Skyrim Locations - Temple of the Divines
The lighting was way too lovely, so I had to grab a couple of screenies from the Temple of Divines.
That sermon was a bit late, but of course this blog wasn’t in existence at the time, so I thought I would do a bit of a late one.
First Planting, The 7th of First Seed, Kynareth’s Day; Sermon
Rejoice! The long winter’s end approaches and soon the sun will again shine bright over Kynareth’s great paradise.
On this day is the time for reparations; as the first seeds of the new year are planted and the crop again grows fresh and new, it is a chance for us as well to begin to grow, and to have another beginning!
On this day, the Divines implore you to settle your battles and to come to peace with your neighbors, friends, family, and even enemies as the warm light of spring prepares to dawn on the horizon of our world and bring harmony once again to Kynareth’s vast wilds.
On this day we give thanks to the Nine for their never ending compassion in leading us through the cold and the snow that has haunted us these past months, and we repent for past offenses.
This is the First Planting, the day of Kynareth, and the day of amends. The dark and frozen days fade away bittersweet. Rejoice in Kynareth’s warm embrace, and in her bountiful mercy! Rejoice!
The Nine Divines → Akatosh Akatosh (known as Auri-El to the Elves, Alduin to the Nords, and Alkosh to the Khajiit) is the chief of the Nine Divines and the god of time. Dragons and Elves alike consider him their father. He is the god-defender of the Empire of Tamriel and symbolizes endurance, invincibility, and everlasting legitimacy.

The Nine Divines → Talos Talos (also known as Tiber Septim, Hjalti Early-Beard, Ysmir, Heir to the Seat of Sundered Kings, and the Dragonborn) is the god of war and governance, the hero-god of mankind, and the patron of questing heroes. As a human, he conquered all of Tamriel and founded the Third Empire.
The Nine Divines → Arkay Arkay is the god of birth, death, burials, and funeral rites and sometimes the seasons. He is the son of Akatosh, the god of time, and the father of all mortal races.
The Nine Divines → Julianos Julianos (known as Jhunal to the Nords) is the god of wisdom and logic. He is considered the father of languages, law, history, literature, and mathematics.
The Nine Divines → Kynareth Kynareth (known as Kyne to the Nords and Khenarthi to the Khajiit) is the goddess of air, wind, and the sky. She gave mankind the power of the Thu’um. She is associated with the stars and rain and is the patron of sailors and travelers.
The Nine Divines → Mara Mara is the goddess of love (in the sense of agape), motherhood, and fertility. She is sometimes considered the wife of Akatosh and mother of Arkay and other times the wife of Lorkhan. She instructs her worshipers to “Live soberly and peacefully. Honor your parents, and preserve the peace and security of home and family.”
