Lili movie review
What a wonderful and charming movie! The basic premise is that young and naive 16 year old Lili is trying to find her way and a place to live after her father has died and stumbles into a dangerous situation before being rescued by a dashing magician. She immediately falls head over heels in love with him and ends up deserted, lost and alone at a circus carnival outside of Paris and is saved, (yet again) by the mysterious, cynical, but kindhearted Paul Berthalet, puppet master. Their relationship is my personal favorite in the movie as there is always a great amount of tension and chemistry between them that is just mesmerizing to watch. Liliâs naivety and innocence takes the forefront for most of the movie as her infatuation for Marc the magician gets her in complicated scenarios without every losing her sense of self, only growing up and finding a new understanding of her worth and what she wants in a climactic confrontation with the man she was pining over about everything that she was able to learn while working and taking and singing with the puppets although she didnât even know it. For me, one of my favorite parts about Liliâs personality was that she had this kind of sweet air of sadness to her that almost made you think she didnât understand grief but at the same time her flowery and delicate comments she made could feel like a heartbreaking punch in the gut.Â
Throughout the course of the movie there was never a wonderfully romantic relationship between Lili and Paul (and also weâre just gonna have to ignore the fact that heâs 32 and sheâs 16 it was the 40â˛s) in the traditional sense, but it was more in the way they looked at each other as the other left the room or the things they said when they werenât there that aided in the subtlety and sweetness of their relationship while fighting and arguing all the time when they were together.Â
Some honorable mentions in terms of scenes would be when Lili first performs in front of an audience and is just so sweet and gentle and everyone just fell madly in love when she sang the classic song Hi-Lili Hi-Lo. And also, when in the penultimate scene, weâre taken out of reality and Lili begins to dance with the puppets as they all transform into Paul and realizes that the love she has be shown and has given to these puppets has been from Paul, the man who she thought hated her.Â
Fave quote:Â âNo. She's like a little bell - that gives off a pure sound no matter how you strike it; because, she's, in herself, so good and true and pure.â
âWe don't learn. We just get older, and we know.â
When 12-year-old Gitanjali Rao learned of the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, she was inspired to invent a tool using Android technology that could empower millions of people. Little did she know that she would become part of a larger movement of women leading the charge for clean water in Flint, Michigan, and beyond.

Sad Student Chronicles; feeling in between
So, once again I will stress that I am in no way writing in a place of having everything together and just crushing life but rather being inspired to write about a feeling or emotion at any given point in time RIGHT NOW. Anyway, that being said, lately Iâve been feeling kind of in between. By that I mean I feel like there is this line that categorizes people into âdepressedâ or ânot depressedâ and while yes I acknowledge human emotion is more fluid and complicated than that, I do feel that right now I donât really fit into either box. Thereâs something strangely polarizing about, at least from where I am right now, the two extreme labels. In many ways I feel I split myself in to many pieces trying to fit into either category rather than just being one whole me and that being ok. To elaborate, in some ways I feel much lighter these days, and in a lot of ways I can see that I am getting better and feeling better; I feel more hopeful and find myself very social and more motivated. Although in other ways I still feel quite empty, like Iâm missing a part of myself thatâs run off somewhere and the rest of me is always a bit anxious yet subdued and apprehensive. And feelings change and vary day to day, I could tell you yesterday I was at a 2 whereas today I feel like Iâm at an 8 and vice versa. I guess my point is I feel that we donât often stop to realize that like I said before, human emotions are fluid, complicated and also valid meaning you donât have to wake up every morning and check a box that says âIâm doing amazing!â or âeverything is terrible uhhhhhâ you can be floating somewhere in between. Trust me, youâre in good company...
P.S I feel like we discuss (us humans) feelings as being very divisive and straightforward and we are quick to see the glass as completely full or completely empty. I do find whenever I feel in between I donât feel super comfortable being honest about how I feel because I internalize these feelings to be a betrayal to either box/category and in some ways make me feel very guilty, Iâll think to myself JuSt ChOoSe OnE ALREADY!!!. (not the way it works unfortunately) Also, I find it hard to communicate these feelings because they arenât black and white but a whole freakin rainbow and jumbled in one giant (beautiful) mess.Â
500 days of summer movie review
I canât believe I havenât seen this movie until now! To break down the plot before I begin: Tom who begrudgingly works at a greeting card cooperation is a hopeless romantic hoping and holding out on âtrue love.â Whereas Summer doesnât believe in true love or making commitments in relationships. My favorite thing about this movie is the complete switch in gender roles in a stereotypical romantic comedy. In this case, Tom is the hopeless romantic searching for love and romanticizing his relationships in an idyllic light and spends most of the movie pining and falling in love hard and fast which is typically the role the female love interest plays. Summer on the other hand is kind of broken and very much aloof and doesnât believe in fate, destiny, or love and is blunt, honest and straightforward that she doesnât want a relationship and just wants something casual with no strings attached. Even tomâs little sister is kind of like the little brother role in that sheâs a tomboy who sheds some light and perspective on his relationship and doesnât get caught up in the sweet romance of it all. the movie starts after the couple has broken up and we get to see Tom reliving his 500 (more or less) days with Summer trying to figure out where it all went wrong, and in doing so, realizes that while they had some good times together, they werenât right for each other and she just didnât love him. But thatâs ok, which is kind of the point of the movie, while this relationship may seem kind of insignificant both characters still grow and change throughout the movie and realize what they want in their lives, which happens to be taking separate courses apart. Because of the gender role/rom com personality swap it makes the movie oh so charming and adorable Tom is charming and awkward and not afraid of talking about falling in love and is very much attached to his emotions and vulnerability. Summer on the other hand distances herself from her emotions in part because of her fear of being vulnerable and letting herself open up to the hurt, pain and turmoils of love which she saw unwind badly in her parentâs marriage leaving her with a kind of scar. In the light of their break up and lack of true love in their relationship, oddly enough rekindles Summerâs hope for love in her new relationship and helps her find her person. For Tom, he too still believes in true love and gains acceptance in their relationship that not every relationship works out and kind of spurs him to finally go after his dream in architecture. P.S the soundtrack and cinematography in this movie was incredible but I also thought that sometimes the plot became a little messy and some characters werenât drawn out enough or were just not memorable.Â
