Berlin's fastest-rising art star (VMAn: http://bit.ly/1L6DoZE ) opens new exhibition VERTICALSEAT at Kunsthalle Basel on the 12th May 2016.

Increasingly it is clear that art can also be a website, a code, or a gif. But is there such a thing as a digital object? And if so, what does it mean for the display, distribution, and collection of art?

Daniel Clery puts the contrast with conventional power starkly in his excellent history of fusion, A Piece of the Sun: ‘A 1-GW coal-fired power station requires 10,000 tonnes of coal—100 rail wagon loads — every day. The Lausanne-based studio founded by Augustin Scott de Martinville (French), Elric Petit (Belgian) and Grégoire Jeanmonod (Swiss) created this literally bold beauty using two tubular parts in metal embedded in each other. Created in 2009 it is already part of MoMA and Musée des Arts Décoratifs collection.

Presented at the 13th Biennale de Lyon this video marks the end of Rafman’s video trilogy that also includes Still Life (Betamale) (2013) and Mainsqueeze (2014). As Zurich-based artist / curator Mitchel Anderson put it aptly:  ‘Rafman’s skill is taking the bizarre and normalizing it, meanwhile forcing the mundane to become mystical.’

The NYT Style Magazine felt it was time again to praise some great minds of nowadays Western world. The selection seems odd, yet not surprising at all: Karl Lagerfeld, Rihanna, Elizabeth Holmes, Quentin Tarantino and Jonathan Franzen. The HKW recently opened its highly anticipated longterm exhibition / debate called 100 Years of Now. Judging only from the opening night’s attendance the issue certainly touches a nerve with my my fellow 20 -30 year olds. Obviously key note speaker Helga Nowotny (*1937), who has been invited to kick-off the 3-year long programmatic discussion, did not reveal anything fundamentally new when recounting the currently widespread dilemmas of short-termism, lack-of-a-future-horizon or problem-solving technologies. And that was neither her aim nor her job. She did set the playing ground for anything else to come and tickled the perma-busy synapses of the audience, reminding everybody of the issues at hand. Until 2018, the HKW will now be the hosting ground for more individuals and social groups probing a countermovement to the dictatorship of the moment.   It remains to be seen how good or worse the current attention span of the Berlin people actually is. Three years is a very long time, for people my age.
