Dinah is back to making murrine marbles again after many, many years. These are somewhat different from her usual creations. They are made by placing thin slices of polymer clay murrine cane on the surface of a handmade glass marble. She makes these special glass marble cores to have a slight but definite “texture” to the surface which allows her to manipulate the clay cane slices into the intricate patterns. The orbs are then baked in the same kilns that she uses for her glass objects though at a much lower temperature. Once hardened, the marbles are painstakingly hand-sanded, polished and buffed to a beautiful shine. See more pix on instagram @gloyzoo

Egyptian Mosaic Glass Double Cartouche Inlay, Ptolemaic, c. 1st Century BC/AD
Mosaic glass frieze of striped tri-glyph motif alternating with four sets of the double-cartouche “The Great House”, the phrase refers to the Pharaoh, surmounted by lotus flowers. Long offset rectangular fused by canes of opaque blue, red, yellow, white, and green glass.
Today’s Weekend Fun Pic: A mosaic glass vessel, dated to about 125-75 BC, before the introduction of glass blowing, made somewhere in the Eastern Mediterranean and found in a tomb at the Etruscan town of Tarquinia. The vessel was made by fusing together many small slices of differing mosaic glass canes at relatively low temperature on a mold, then tooling the body in the flame. The rim was formed from an applied length of decorated cane. Now in The British Museum, London. Photo Credit: Clio Ancient Art and Antiquities
