For everyoneâs information:
The plan for the 17th, when the adult content ban comes in, is to protest.
To do that, we are making as much noise either side of the 17th as possible, and using the site as normal.
On the 17th, dead silence.
People are saying log off but what they really mean is donât open the site or the app.
But, on the 17th make as much noise as possible on every other platform. Tweet about it and post on facebook and instagram and everywhere else.
What this does is causes a massive dip in ad revenue for one single day. That does not make staff think âoh everyoneâs gone letâs shut down.â What it actually makes them think is âoh shit people arenât happy and if people donât keep using our site weâre out of money and out of jobs.â
A boycott reminds a company that the users (consumers) have the power to make their site (business) worthless with one single coordinated decision.
If you want to join in, hereâs what to do:
Do:
Close all open instances of the app and site on all your devices before the 17th
Make posts before and after the 17th on tumblr and other platforms, talking about why this ban is bad
Make posts on other sites during the 17th. Flood the official tumblr staff twitter and facebook with your anger and your opinion
Come back on the 18th and check in
Donât:
Delete the app from your phone (this doesnât affect their revenue and since itâs off the store at the moment itâll be hard to get back)
Delete your account. I mean you can if you want to, but if you keep your account and donât use it youâre saying to staff that thereâs still time to save it. If you delete itâs hard work to come back.
Open the app or website (including specific blogs)
Make any posts (turn down/off your queue and make sure nothing is scheduled)
Go quiet elsewhere. Make it clear that this is just about tumblr, not a mass move away from all social media.
Remember: the execs donât care about anything but money. Shutting down the site means thereâs $0 further income from it. Thatâs their last possible course of action. If we make it clear weâre not happy, theyâll have to do something or we can do more and more until it becomes too expensive.
Protests take commitment. Theyâre a defiant action against a business that is doing something wrong. They will try to scare you into not participating, because theyâre scared. We hold all the power here, sometimes the execs just need to be reminded of that.
For those who arenât leaving on the 17th like I am.

Why âfemale-presenting nipplesâ matter
When I was 10, my mom made me wear a bra and it felt like a punishment for being different.
When I was 10, I took the bra off when changing for gymnastics and accidentally dropped it in the school hallway. A teacher picked it up and said, âOh, this must belong to youâ and handed it back to me in front of everyone. I quit gymnastics.
When I was 11, I thought maybe the boobs would be okay so long as they didnât get any bigger than would fit in my hand, so I kept measuring it, but they did.
When I was 12, I started wearing two or three sports bras to smush them down, until one day a classmate said, âAre you wearing two bras?!â while laughing.
When I was 13, a boy told me he wanted to squeeze my boobs âuntil they popped.â
When I was 14, I got cast in a play as an older character and a classmate told me I got the role because I had boobs.
When I was 17, my mom told me to return a swimsuit because it would be too distracting for my boyfriendâs father.
When I was 21, I got properly fitted for a bra and everyone felt the need to tell me how much better my boobs looked.
When I was 26, I got pregnant and my immediate fear was that my boobs would get bigger.
When I was 28, I got shamed for trying to feed my screaming baby in public without a cover.
When I was 28, people asked me âwhy are you bothering to use a breastfeeding cover?â
When I was 30, people gave me weird looks that I wasnât yelling at my kid for putting their hand on my boob.
When I was 31, I avoided going to the beach or pool because I didnât want to have to deal with boobs in a swimsuit.
When I was 32, I got asked, again, âwhy donât you get a breast reduction?â
When I was 33, I watched a 5yo girl get shamed for running around in sweltering heat without a shirt on and had to reprimand a bunch of tween boys who thought it was okay to shame her for doing something they do all the time.
When I was 34, my kid kept patting my breast and saying âMommyâs squishy breast!!â They will never see me express any shame about tits, because I want them to have a different mindset than I had. Yes, boobs are nice! Theyâre squishy! Theyâre fun! Thatâs the end of that.
Iâm 35 and no longer give a fuck. I donât care anymore. As a teenager my tits were covered in stretch marks. Theyâve been engorged with milk. My nipple changed shape with pregnancy. Give it another couple decades and my breasts will probably be all wrinkly. Itâs sexual when Iâm using it sexually. I donât fucking care, and I wonât be ashamed anymore.Â
Every time a policy or cultural hangup treats people with breasts differently, it fucks us over.Â
Tumblrâs new policy makes an active choice to participate in this culture of shame. By classifying âfemale-presenting nipplesâ as explicit material, Tumblr has taken a stance that any chest or breast that differs from a male default is worthy of shame and unavoidably sexual. The idea that breasts are shameful and unavoidably sexual is exactly what fucked me up for so much of my life.
Stop shaming people for having bodies.Â

I will be leaving tumblr for good. I already did it before because of the whiney community I built myself. However, this time Iâll leave because of the sexist and artist unfriendly attitude regarding tumblrs new guidelines! Even though, I havenât really been uploading actual nsfw content, until recently⌠And I didnât need to. And I still donât need to. However, I can not tolerate such behaviour⌠Iâve been following certain nsfw artists, have been involved in this community. I respect artists and sex workers. Tumblr doesnât. So I will leave. Nothing is holding me here anyways
Thank you for nothing, tumblr! <3 Itâs not been nice with you!

DONâT LEAVE TUMBLR
I know itâs tempting to leave and migrate to Twitter or Deviantart or whatever place to put your content due to the new policies, but DONâT. Let me explain why:
when your space is invaded, do you leave and let them take it? or do you stay because itâs YOUR space.
Leaving Tumblr wonât solve anything. As nonchalant as the staff is, if we leave, the new policy will stay in tact and NOTHING will be fixed.
We have to stay right here and tell the staff to go fuck themselves (Not literally, donât harass the staff with threats or something) and do whatever we can to let them know their rules ainât shit. Fix it.
it could take awhile. Weeks, a month, but we HAVE to kill this new policy.
Make petitions, videos, posts, but DO NOT LEAVE TUMBLR until they learn how to fix their shit.
Disagree. We need a new home. Staff has been terrible for a decade now. They will not reverse this decision. This is why we have something like AO3, this is why Pillowfort is in development. We shouldnât have to deal with shitty staff that donât know how to run a website or what their userbase is or that what theyâre doing is essentially murdering their own site. These people will always choose censorship and profit over building a quality site for their users.
Why spend the effort and energy fighting over a site whose owners donât care and have never cared? Since the very beginning, users have had to mod Tumblr in order to make it usable. Why bother? Staff had ten years of chances to make improvements, and instead theyâve chosen this. This website isnât for us anymore. And thatâs not the end of the world. It gives us a good reason to find a platform that works with us and for us.
Pillowfort looks like itâs going to be the AO3 of fandom-friendly (and of course NSFW-friendly) social media. Thatâs what weâve needed to build ever since the LiveJournal strikethrough days. Continuing to fight Tumblr on this is a waste of energy and at best will equate to putting a band-aid on a severed artery. They will always come back to censorship and account deletion as their preferred method to handle things that their advertisers donât like.
