President George H. W. Bush orders the start of Operation Desert Shield in response to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait five days earlier. The president’s order initiated the buildup of troops and military resources in Saudi Arabia to prevent an Iraqi invasion there. There was fear among both Saudi Arabia and the United States that Iraq would attempt to occupy Saudi Arabian oil fields, putting them in control of the majority of the world’s oil reserves. Operation Desert Shield was described by the president as a “wholly defensive” mission with no intentions for actual warfare. However, this doctrine was quickly abandoned once Iraq declared Kuwait was part of their country.
