Ren metes his iron-jawed attention from his perch.

Let her scour. She'll see as far as she can with her eyes.

"All you have to do is leave this place," he hums, his mind's eye tipped toward the lake. All its gentle purls. All Galatea's paltry considerations. "That'll be the easy part."

The helm surveys her slowly, scanning for something more than a little spark.

The answer she gives him now is much more measured than any she would usually offer, if his edges weren’t so obviously sharp. Kylo Ren approaches Galatea, panthering and fully armored, leather palm hidden, steering the tides in his favor. Nearer Galatea folded in her chair and lapping juice from her wrist, unwittingly making a space for him in her veins. He may be another jagged scar tracing her forearm, her spine. 

"This place will quash you."

Though it appears he will not. He sits, observes the dripping orange, perched hawk on her outcrop. 

I must appear as a corpse to you.

Some hawks are scavengers. But not all. 

"You do see reasons." He corrects Galatea, with helm tilted, this bright and curious thing, this sword-colored and latticed thing, all its soft distortions. "You see stars." 

Black steel meets green kyber, not for the first time. Galatea holds his visor in her lack of fear. Nectar dripping from her palm. Ren held his sigil beneath his tattered stole and released it under his cloak. He could get what he wanted; he was learning- there were ways hashed from will, and there are effective ways. 

Some require patience. 

"You see them in your dreams," Ren murmurs, durasteel animus listening for motion in the brush. Waiting. "You know you're bigger than Affadar, don't you?" 

His mask winks at her in the scant sun. Rubble and sun motes crowd his boots and swirl around his fingers. Sensing desire. Longing and restlessness.

"What have you been waiting for?"

She should feel fear. But she does not.

She feels, for him, the same thing she feels for the stars - the subtle pull, that calls to her. A whisper against the shell of her ear, a palm pressing flat against the small of her back, an itch somewhere inside her.

That she is meant for more than… This.

Her eyes narrow at his comments. Not anger, not fear - almost… Suspicion.

It has been said, more than once, that there is just… something about her, a little streak of something that glints through at times, denouncing her somehow as other. But, unable to put their finger on it, the casual observer shrugs their shoulders, dismisses it and looks away until it passes.

He does no such thing. He perceives it. He is reaching out with both hands to touch it, he wants to bring it closer, turn it this way and that - admire it perhaps? Certainly wants to appraise it. She is not used to being seen so.

She lowers her gaze and offers him a shrug as she considers his question. What is she waiting for? Why does she stay?

Opportunity? No, ships leave everyday - there will be a mass exodus of the offworlders soon, before the weather turns, she could join any single one of them.

The threat that she might die, should she leave, not old and in her bed, surrounded by her children and her children’s children - but alone, and cold and pointlessly? No. Each day here is dirt and danger. How many did they lose last season?

In a few more weeks the rains will start making the risk of flooding too great and the mining will stop for a time, until the constant barrage of water stops and the risk, while never not there, fades to a background concern. And while the rains protect her from dying under the ground - they also bring the sickness that killed her mother, offering her a slow death instead, wasting away in pain.

She does not want to die here - no matter the circumstances - even if she went, in her own bed, old and warm and safe, she had long resolved that it would not be with someone she loved hovering over her, whether that was a husband or the children she’d borne him, because she had no interest in either of those things.

So… Why stay..?

Because it was easy..? Simpler to stay?

Once, when she had been younger, the pull had been almost too much to ignore - every night an empty belly, facing down the memories of how her mother had died screaming, every day a paw caught in a snare - if she could just be strong enough to bite it off she could surely have something better - nothing could be worse… But she had never managed it… And now, she had not gone to bed hungry in years, and the snare was old and frayed - she could slip out of it or pull and it would simply snap.

She has felt the pull - for as long as she can recall.

Like hairs standing up on the back of your neck, or the smell of the earth just before the rains come, the moment when the rope slips and just for a second before it catches you’re in free fall. And even once she understood a little of what it meant, like a comms message, during the wet season, when the relays got too bogged down by rain to cope - it’s always been fuzzy, indiscernible - ignorable to some extent.

But he… he is a signal booster of some kind and the message is roaring to life, butting up against her consciousness, demanding attention.

People who leave go mad, so it’s said. Separated from the Lake and the Mountain Thurr it weakens the mind, poisons the body and she’s not quite sure that she believes that, any more than she believes her brother is how he is because her father didn’t take him to the lake when he was born. She doesn’t think she’ll go mad - but here at least - she has some idea of who she is. Here - she is cocooned and somewhat safe from self examination. The idea of shedding the chrysalis only to find something she cannot look at, cannot recognise, has always stilled the urge to go.

He is right, staying here will end her sooner than it should… She can feel the truth of it, pumping through her veins like poison. It might hurt to suck it from the wound, and it will almost certainly taste bitter - but the relief a removing the barb…
