Sirius was lounging on a couch that had been moved, no doubt by him, dangerously close to the fireplace. He was sorting through a modest stack of Valentine’s, tossing them one by one into the fire after having a laugh or twisting his face in disgust. He thought he heard a choked sob from somewhere behind him, but paid it no mind. 

He spaztically, but not completely ungracefully, jolted up when he caught a glimpse of dark red hair pass, “Oi! Evans! I’ve got something for you–” He stuck out his hand, holding a box of chocolates for her to take. They were from his mother and bound to contain something particuralily vile, if he didn’t get rid of them he was bound to find Remus gorging on them and the last thing he wanted was for Remus to eat anything his mother had so much as looked at. 

Knowing she wasn’t likely to trust him, and with good reason, Sirius quickly added,

Sirius had already given Remus a giant bar of dark chocolate that morning when the boys exchanged their usual Valentine’s day gifts; typically sweets with the occasional appearance of some small item from Zonko’s. However, he still had one more thing to give him. Sirius would have done it that moring, just to get it over with, but he didn’t want Remus to mistake it for their usual, expected gifts that didn’t actually mean anything. It was supposed to mean something, what he didn’t know himself, but something, surely.

There in Herbology when he finally decides it a good time. Maybe because the other Marauders are focused on not getting their hands torn to shreds while they work and therefore pay no attention when he slides the key over to Remus, at least he doesn’t think they do. Or maybe it’s because Remus is preoccupied with being a good student and Sirius doesn’t think he’ll press him about it right then. 

Under his breath he explains with a shrug,

      Awkward was not a color often  worn by one Sirius Orion Black the third,it did not suit him at all. He was suave and above all the self-consciousnessthat plagued  other  teenagers.  At  least  that’s how it  seemed  most  of  the time. Now, however, sitting in  the  deserted  common  room  at  four  in  the morning with Remus because neither  of  them had been able to sleep had led to more important and intimate conversations about each of their home lives and childhoods than Sirius had ever been comfortable having.
