As melodic as pop, and without the rough edges of hardcore punk, pop punk is one of the most loved sub-genres of rock. If we mention Green Day, Fall Out Boy, and Paramore, these household names give you some idea of the success some pop punk bands have had. This was helped in part by the extensive airplay the genre had during the 1990s. A highlight was Blink-182’s Enema Of The State album (1999), featuring the commercial hits, “All The Small Things”, “Adam’s Song” and “What’s My Age Again?”

It’s possible Bad Religion may have influenced the melodic side to pop-punk, with their regular use of vocal harmonies fronted by Greg Graffin. However, the Descendents and Hüsker Dü are also cited as influential.

The mainstream popularity of pop punk dipped a little a few years ago, but we’re seeing a resurgence with bands such as All Time Low, You Me at Six, and Four Year Strong, representing a new generation and selling plenty of records. “Alternative dance” (a.k.a. indie/underground dance) is an interesting term that covers everyone from pioneers, New Order, in the 1980s, to groups like Hot Chip and Justice today. It’s a genre that almost has more in common with alt/indie rock, than the dance music its title suggests. The underground community feel and melodic structure of indie rock, mixes with the samples, beats and synths we associate with electronic music.

If we traced the spiritual home of the genre, we’d travel to Manchester, England. Specifically, The Haçienda nightclub was a fixture for alt. dance. Although the venue was sadly demolished in 2002, it was also important in the development of acid house and rave music. The venue also features prominently in the 2002 film, 24 Hour Party People, which covers the “Madchester” scene.

Today, like all dance music (arguably ALL music), the genre has its home on the internet primarily. Websites, social media, and blogs are hubs for an international community of producers and consumers to engage in. With that in mind, here’s a playlist of over 100 alternative dance songs to listen to and share!

Take the genre of folk rock, and mix it together with traditional Celtic music, welcome to Celtic rock!

Before Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly, the genre came about in the early 1970s. Ireland’s folk, blues and pop was flourishing at the end of the 1960s, and it was inevitable that musicians would experiment with mixing elements of all three. Thin Lizzy’s electric rendition of traditional Irish folk tune, “Whiskey In The Jar”, would appear to be one of the first Celtic rock hits. Though moving forward, Phil Lynott & co. wouldn’t produce quite the same kind of music.

Celtic rock can be divided into further sub-genres: Celtic punk was made popular by The Pogues in the 1980s, and Celtic metal is alive with bands such as Primordial and Waylander today. The roots of hardcore grew in southern California, sometime in the late seventies. Fear, Germs, Circle Jerks and Black Flag were some of the originators. Though the major labels steered clear, the bands showed ambition and distributed their music through their own indie record labels. Eventually scenes developed in other major cities all across the U.S., including Washington, D.C. and New York, before it would have its place globally.

Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains and Wasted Youth are all different, prolific bands who supported the same hardcore cause as well. It has influenced metal, grunge and indie rock to name just a few genres. Slayer’s Undisputed Attitude (1996) as an example, is filled with hardcore punk covers. It was also an avenue for the straight edge movement to come about, through Ian MacKaye of Minor Threat, most prominently. Today, hardcore stays alive, albeit more commercially, with the likes of Rise Against, The Bronx and Gallows.

Calle13 will play tomorrow May 17 in Costa Rica at Centro de Eventos Pedregal!
