In the midst of it all, I’ve been presented with more opportunities at the lil shop on the prairie, more installs after hours.  The week after helping my sculptor/mentor I went out to a job site to set a few base cabinets in a client’s utility room. My boss knows I’ve been hankering for more install experience, and he and his wife are privy to my radio-makin’ fantasies.  Turns out the retired couple they dispatched me to are fuuuuuucking badasses.  Upon entering the main house of their lovely rural compound I was greeted by an array of vintage music posters boasting the likes of Loretta Lynn, Bob Wills, and Bob Dylan.  When I looked over my shoulder to focus on a particular corner of the living space I realized there was at least a half dozen sets of keys -electric organs and a baby grand. As you do, right? When I finished setting the couple cabinets I was invited out to their music studio, and learned they are employed by the state as archivists to digitise all of Leon Russell’s master tapes, including those from his label ‘Shelter Records’. Here you can see the bitchin’ old school reel-to-reel machines used in this archiving process.  Sweeties, you better know I’m dreamin’ and schemin’ of a way to make a radio story about this far-out process.  I came away from that gig reminded of how out here on the plains, I’m still walking among angels.  It’s easy to get caught up entertaining prospects in other places but this little side gig did a lot to ground me in the opportunity that lies here in God’s Country, if I just pause long enough to make myself available to it.
