620 pages, almost as many characters to keep track of and an intricate geopolitical plot. Obvious parallels to GOT - and I really liked this!

Over 2.000 years of world history in 300 pages - that's both a feat and absolutely impossible. And fairly entertaining!

Predictable plot, irritating characters, clumsy writing... This one did not have much going for it.

Contrary to the author, I have never ever aspired to be a Victorian. I still enjoyed reading about their food, underwear, sexlives, personal hygiene and sleeping arrangements.

Common traits of Swedish Maria Lang and Agatha Christie : a retro setting, a congenial detective, old fashioned murder mysteries, an overall sense of familiarity.

Even Sweden's own Agatha Christie doesn't really pull off the short story format, I'm afraid.

Efficient though rather uninspired, considering Larsson is normally Sweden's best crime writer.

Quite feminist for 1903, though sadly that does not make this a fun read in 2023.

Like many ethnic minorities, the Sami culture is conspicuously absent from Scandinavian literature. If there are more Laestadiuses up there, waiting to be published, I can't wait. This is my kind of thriller!

Not that the story really matters when the prose is this elegant, but : Doomed love affair to the backdrop of late 1950s America. History and literature at their very finest!
