I never knew what it was like

to care for something

until you came along.

At first you were nothing to me,

but then nothing became something,

and then something became everything,

and I had no idea until that everything

became nothing once more.

As I carried you home,

I felt as if my tears could fill oceans

and my cries could fill the ears

of everyone in this world

to let them know what I lost.

I never knew what it was like

to be changed,

to become changed,

until your presence changed me.

You were my friend

who was the moon to my night skies,

the lantern to my dark paths,

and every single candle

that lit up every single one of my rooms.

And now that you are gone,

I have no idea what to do now,

or where to go.

I have become lost in my own darkness

once more,

and had know idea I was lost the first time

until you were there.

I never knew what it was like

to miss something

or someone

until this very moment.

As you lay buried in the garden,

your body is placed in the ground,

and yet it feels as if you’re a thousand miles

away from me.

I miss you more than the dry earth

misses rain.

I miss you more than the sun

misses the moon as it passes in the sky,

and more than the moon misses the sun

because of the same thing.

I miss you more than the ocean

misses every coral reef

that dies within it,

and I miss you more than the forest

misses every tree it loses to the fire

one way or another.

I miss you more than the terrible swordsman

who misses every swing,

and the terrible marksman

who misses every shot.

I miss you more than I miss

the bliss of ignorance,

and euphoria of not caring for anything,

and every meal that I have ever finished,

and every meal that will be left unfinished

from now on.

I miss you from your smile,

to our jokes,

to your simple existence in my house,

to the way that you’d burn every marshmallow,

to even the way that you’d step

on the amethyst floor

where we first became friends.

I love you so much

and if I had the chance to tell you that,

I would.

Even if I only had five minutes,

or even five seconds,

I would.
