If you have an f/o who's cynical or pessimistic: what if you're the one to make them see things differently?
As you grow closer and they watch you move through this world, your presence brings something into their life that they've unknowingly lacked—calm, joy, fun, laughter, peaceful silence, softness—and in response, an unnamed ache within them starts to ease.
They're not sure how you do it, how you effortlessly lift the heavy shroud of darkness that hangs around them to let in the light. You don't seem to even realise how you're changing them, how their mindset has started to move away from views born of painful, bitter thorns of emotion—despair, anger, apathy, fear—and instead, a world of gentle, hopeful doubt has begun to grow, small but bright.
What if life can be good? What if people can be kind? What if the world can give, not just take? What if I can belong here?
Slowly but surely, something shifts. The constant tension that follows in their wake begins to unwind itself from their shoulders; they smile more often and with increasing sincerity, their once-unheard laughter becoming familiar; they speak of future plans with excitement, and they start to see life with a clarity that has alluded them for what feels like a lifetime.
Whilst life can be painful and cruel, they think that maybe, just maybe... it can be good, too. It can be exciting, and peaceful, and beautiful. It can be bittersweet, and it can hurt whilst still being worthwhile. It's so much more complicated than they thought, and it leaves them with the daunting, wonderful realisation that there's so much more they still don't understand.
Though they might never admit it, they hope you continue to prove them wrong. With you, the world no longer seems as hopeless as it once did.
Bonus: if you struggle with cynical or pessimisitic thinking too, imagine how you and your f/o uplift each other.
Even without meaning to, even without realising, each of you brings something to the other that gently guides you both from a place of hurt to a life with more joy and possibility than you ever thought possible.
