They Bloom At Night

YA horror

after a hurricane, a red algae bloom has taken over a small Louisiana town, leaving people to survive in a semi-apocalyptic situation, with mutated creatures lurking in the rising water

a teen haunted by an assault from her older boyfriend is left taking care of her immigrant mother, who believes their dead family is reincarnated in the depths

when their town leader demands they find out what happened to some visiting scientists along with his daughter, they’re faced with the fact that there’s something in them that’s changing

But as he starts to care for her, the dynamic shifts. It starts with teasing and "poking the bear" just to get a reaction. Then, as he grows more desperate to connect—and realizes he’s fundamentally incapable of a "normal" confession, he starts showing her his "vulnerability through flaws."
