It has been one year since bramble died.

my other mouse passed the following March.

I brought home a baby a month or two later. Fell ill.

It was mold. My roommate had black mold and didn't take care of it or tell me. So despite catching symptoms early and doing multiple rounds of antibiotics, unfortunately since I did not know there was a constant airborne irritation, there was no improvement.

I have no had mice since the baby passed away in spring. There is no longer mold, but it will be checked up on every month to be sure. Maybe in 2024 I will have mice again. I don't know.

Bramble passed away in December after falling ill and not responding to medications. His body condition depleted and I watched him continuously lose energy and appetite while doing my best to treat his illness and keep him happy. In the end, I came to the hard decision to have him humanely euthanized. His paw prints will be taken and he will be cremated. ❤️

I’m going to get either mice or gerbils in a couple of months! Any advice? (I already have a cage. It’s a 10 gallon with a topper)

Idk anything about mice! But for gerbils at least 10 gallons is a little small! The general rule of thumb is 10 gallons per gerbil minimum and gerbils are best kept in pairs!

Not sure how old this post is but just thought I'd offer my 2¢ !

Female mice should be kept in trios at least, as if you get a pair and one dies, you'll be scrambling to find her a friend and have to do quarantine and introduction periods which will extend the amount of time the remaining female is alone, causing stress.

Male mice should be kept alone, or with female multimammates (African soft furred rats). It's possible but not always considered ethical to have male mice neutered (it's more common in Europe), in which case they can then be housed with females after their recovery period. Male mice will attack and kill each other at some point or another. One of mine was a rescue from that kind of situation.

The minimum tank size for a single male or trio of females is 10 US gallons, but it's recommended to use 20 US gallons, as it's easier to fit the necessities and enrichment, and more wheels if necessary.

Word of advise from a former petco employee to new pet owners, take any information given by a chain pet store employee with a grain of salt. Rodents, reptiles, invertebrates, birds, and fish have very specific requirements, it's unreasonable to expect one person to know all of them. Employees are there to make a pay check, and that means getting you to buy as much as possible. Despite what the company might say, the well being of animals is not the main goal. And while we're on this topic, just because a pet store sells a product does not mean it's good for animals.
