“Oh, it’s probably for the best. I was a difficult teenager anyway- unbelievable, isn’t it?” She murmured, linking her arm through his. She couldn’t recall Miller ever mentioning a sister in the past. Truth be told, there were a lot of things they didn’t know about each other. But that didn’t seem to matter.

Inside the diner, Ophelia shrugged off her jacket and slipped into a booth by the windows. “Have you ever come close to getting married?” She asked softly, as if it would be a secret between them. 

Arms   linked   together   ,   he   smiled   .   A   difficult   teenager   ?   NEVER   .   He   was   sure   she   must   have   been   the   VERY   IMAGE   of   cooperative   .   All   sweet   smiles   &&   obedience   .   No   one   would   have   a   bad   word   to   say   about   her          in   public   . 

Where   Ophelia   slid   ,   Miller   did   something   more   along   the   lines   of COLLAPSE   :   His   body   hitting   the   vinyl   with   a   thud   only   somewhat   concealed   by   the   padded   surface   ,   fingers   instantly   riffling   through   the   multi-colored   sugar   packets   on   the   table   ,   just   for   the   fun   of   it   .   “   Only   once   officially   ,   ”   he   replied   ,   stopping    his   story   just   long   enough   to   flag   down   a   waitress   and   order   coffee   .   

“   I   was   seventeen   ,   she   was   nineteen   .   A   friend   of   my   brother          but   we   all  grew   up   with   her   .   Long   story   short   ,   I   socked   her   in   the   mouth   ,   she   accused   me   of  diddlin’er kid   :   it   didn’t   work   out   .   Then   there   was   a   girl   in   college   ,   Henri   .   She   was   great   ,   dated   her   for   three   years   ,   but   we   both   knew   it   wouldn’t   go   anywhere   .   She   was   more   LIKE   YOU   than   she   was   like   me   .   Her   parents   let   me   stay   in   there   lake   house   during   the   summers  ,   it   was   nice   at   the   time   but   I’m   fairly   sure   it   was   just   because   they   knew   they   wouldn’t   have   to   put   up   with   me   for   long   .   There   was   another   pointless   longterm   relationship   in   there   ,   but   that   one   was   fuckin’   garbage   to   be   perfectly   honest   ,   like   even I   had   to   say   WHAT   THE   FUCK   at   some   of   the   shit   that   girl   pulled   .   And  then   there   was   Ella   .   She   was   only   a   few   years   back   .   Would   have   married   her   ,   but   I    think   she   would   have   DIED   before   taking   me   up   on   that   .   ” 

It seemed to quell him enough to stop his rambling. Pleased with himself, he sat up a bit straighter. “I appreciate that, really do. But, TBF, you’re ‘bout as social && lively as Gran’s ashes at a birthday party. So, really, I ain’t SURPRISED.” despite that, he blew the man a half-assed attempt at a kiss. “You’re buyin’ your main bitch lunch, right? Could go for a slushie.”

Miller   thought   that   bringing   a   departed  loved   ones   ashes   to   a  birthday   party  ,   or   ANY   EVENT   really   ,   would   be   VERY   lively   ,   thank   you   very   much   :   But   it   was   hardly   worth   arguing   over   .   

Soft head came to rest contentedly against his shoulder, a peppermint sigh passing between her lips. Worth getting up early for, she thought. It was certainly the most memorable wedding gift she’d received so far. Hard to top such a unique and thoughtful present. 

“Fruit cups? Please, I get all my produce from silver platters.” She murmured low, playing the spoilt rich girl for old time’s sake. “Let’s go to a diner, I want pancakes.” 

Catching their reflection together in a shop window, her lips curved into something approximating a smile. “Look at that, we could be family,” she noted, “I could’ve used a big brother when I was younger. Where the hell were you?” 

Pancakes   .   The   building   they   were   approaching   looked   like   it   could   do   pancakes   well   enough          in   fact   ,   pancakes   were   probably   the   ONLY   thing   they   did   well   .   “   Terrorizing   the   sister   I   already   had   ,   probably   .   ”   Surprisingly   enough   ,   TERRORIZING   may   have   been   a   bit   of   a   reach   .   Considering   the   sort   of   brother   he   COULD   have   been   ,   Miller   was   practically   an   angel   to   the   little   thing   .
